2616.0. "puegeot frame question" by EST::BOURDESS () Mon Jul 26 1993 12:48

I've got a question regarding my frame and its strength. This all
started because my frame does not require a seat-post clamp. Instead
it has a hole in the tubing where an allen-bolt can be screwed in to
hole the seat post in place. The problem is that the part of the frame
that takes the bolt is stripped. I was wondering if anyone knew
whether or not it would be a bad idea to use a tap & die set to
rethread the frame. Its a puegeot frame and is made of chrome-molly.
Any help woould be greatly appreciated.....

I'm not familiar with Puegout, but I do know that you can buy an
external clamp (with bolt and nut or quickrelease) to go around the
seatpost. Assuming that your seatpost has somewhat of a slit cut into
the back so it can be compressed (although I'd imagine you could cut
one with a dremel or hacksaw) by the clamp and assuming that you can
get the clamp to fit your size seattube. Regardless, if it's steel, I
can't see any problem with retapping it one size larger and putting a
new hex head bolt in it. It shouldn't hurt it if it's done correctly (
lots of cutting oil so you don't get the metal too hot). I've seen the
clamps in a Mountain Bike Action ad and also in the Loose Screws
    catalog, I think.

Well, about the seat clamp, it can't be done. There isn't enough metal
above the top tube; the frame just doesn't go any higher than the top
tube. About the re-tapping, thats what I was thinking about doing.
I'm just not too familiar with chrome molly, and don't want to crack or
in some other way ruin the frame.

Thanx for the suggestion about cutting oil; what is it and where should
    I get some?

I can just picture re-tapping it and seeing a hairline crack running
all the way through the tubiing.

Chrome moly is reasonably soft steel and will retap without
fracturing. The hole should be redrilled to the proper size for the
tap.(each tap comes with a specific drill size for best results)

As far as cutting oil for this operation, motor oil works well.
(or go to a tool and die maker, they probably give you the 5cc's you
need). If you don't like the result (I don't like the sound of it = not
enough metal) you can always drill and tap into the seat post. There's a
lot more material to produce threads. To gain adjustability, you could
get fancy and "slot" the Steel tube.

And if you really blow it, you can always send the hole all the way
the seat tube and seat post and use a nut on the other side. There
are many ways to assure attachment, retapping is only the first
    approach.

    Good luck,
    Paul

thanx for the info. I think I'll be trying to re-tap it tonight.

then there's teh solution which is found on Trek's 5x00 series. The
clamp is on the seat post and just prevents it from going deeper
    into the seat tube.

If someone says "wow, that's grody" Just tell them that it's the
solution used on many of the best frames made. :-)
