2597.0. "Mountain biking trails around Boston?" by SUBPAC::HAMADE () Tue Jun 15 1993 18:03

Dudes,

I moved recently to Boston where I had my taste of the Charles River
biking experience. But as you know, mountain biking it ain't!

Any tips on where I could find decent trails within a few miles from
Boston? Your suggestions will be most appreciated!

Just about any bookstore will have books and guides on MTBing in areas
around Boston and areas maybe a little farther out, which are
    definitely worth the trip.

I live in Watertown. The closest place to ride near Boston is the Middlesex
Fells. It's possible to ride there from downtown & it's definitely worth
the trip. The Fells overlaps 4 towns - Medford, Winchester on the west side
of RT 93 and Malden, Stoneham on the east side. So far I have only ridden on
the west side & I have been "lost" on more than one occasion - that's how big
it is. Aside from the occasional roar of traffic on 93 (depending on where
you are), you will be surprised at how close to the city you are. A few words
of warning: go late in the afternoons on the weekends as it is very popular
with hikers, runners & other bikes. Also, Mt bikes aren't allowed on any of
the hiking trails & there are clearly posted signs. I have "accidently"
ridden on the singletracks & they are very technical & fast but due to the
erosion, they're off-limits. There are 3 resevoirs for the town of Winchester.
These are off-limits to everyone & are clearly marked. Watch out for the red
truck! You will get fined if you're caught. The fire roads and bridle trails
are still a lot of fun & the hill up to the resevoir will provide a great view
of Boston as well as Mt. Wachusett, not to mention giving your lungs a good
workout.

If you're willing to drive, the other place where I've been biking is the Lynn
Woods in Lynn which is probably my personal favorite because there's some good
climbing and a lot of technical descents. They also have cross-country races
there.

Other places I've been riding is the Lincoln Conservation in Lincoln, Rock
Meadows in Belmont, and the Weston Conservation in Weston. I have a book
called Mt. Biking near Boston which I bought at REI in North Reading.

Hope this helps -Russ
2597.4Caryll Park-Hale Reservation/Dover-WestwoodLASSIE::ZIELONKOWed Jun 16 1993 16:3915
I'm not a mountain biker but i know of a place in Dover that seems to be a mecca
for mountain bikers. It's called "Caryll Park". It's about 4 miles from Needham
Center. Take Highland Ave south (don't know how you'll get there as i don't know
where you'd be coming from). Bear right down Chapel St at the light where St.
Joe's church is on your left. Next light is Needham ctr. Go straight thru the
light onto Chestnut St. Caryll Park is on that road in DOver.

Caryll Park is a *huge* series of walking trails in dover and is also connected
to another series of trails called the Hale Reservation in Westwood. There are
lots of wide paths and some single track. There is one hill called Noanet Peak
from which you can see the Pru' and the Hancock.

This probably goes without saying but bring your bug juice. My wife and I go
there for walks but usually give it a rest from June to September because of the
mosquitoes.
