2533.0. "PETE'S MONDAY RIDE" by WMOIS::GIROUARD_C () Tue Apr 20 1993 16:05

     Here's one man's perspective on Peter Vincent's Monday l-o-n-g
    s-l-o-w ride...

I'm chopped big time. It's my fault. I didn't have to be. I made the
    choice.

The ride did start out slow. In fact, too slow. It took us an hour to
cover 15 miles. So, a group of us (6) decided that we'd break out and
the other group would would take the reasonable pace and route.

Well, the group I took off with included Charlie Shnare and a few
other guys (LeMond, Bugno, Roche - I think these guys were in that
    group).

Anyway, we ended up doing a little over 60 miles with an average of
17.5 mph. Don't let that fool you. The first 15-20 miles we were
averaging 13mph. There were flats when we hammered along at 27-28mph.

For me, this ride represented more miles (that day) than I have
altogether outside so far this season.

The route got very hilly demanding. Some wind gusts had to be close to
    45mph.

In summary, I was way in over my head from a current seasonal fitness
perspective and the class of the group I was stupid enough to hook
onto. I did okay on the flats and small hills. The big hills left
me with a great "butt view" of the group.

One interesting note. It was my first ride with my Flite Evolution
saddle. If you've seen this saddle, it is a carbon shell. That's it.
no padding - no leather/suede cover. I couldn't believe how comfortable
it was. It felt great the whole ride. Even today, I feel great. Norm
LeFluer and I were talking and I guess it basically comes down to...
If the fit is there, it doesn't matter.

Chip forgot to mentioned that I was NOT in the hammer head group.

As much as I enjoy the abuse of good hilly slug fest, the ride was
advertised as Long SLOW Distance and that's what some of us did!

Side note - a group of us rode from Leominster on Sunday out to
Princeton and up Mt. Wachusette. You may want to wait a few weeks
before you do any hill work on the Mt. I expected a bit of snow on
the road. We ended up carrying our bikes across trails that still
had 6' - 8' of snow! I'm was told that they will be skiiing
until the 28th of this month.

2533.2Pete's Monday RideSUBSYS::SCHNARECHARLIE SCHNARETue Apr 20 1993 17:0129
Pete's ride started out just a bit too slow for a small group if riders who
wanted to be back by 2pm. I knew the area and I was asked to go back and speak
with Peter about forming a second group to go off at a little faster pace with
the goal to be back by 2pm.

This group pretty much paced a nice tempo ride and I was in the small ring 90%
of the time. In fact I had mentioned to a couple of riders in the group that
they should get off the big ring and spin more.

Mike Dwyer who was also in this group did the majority of the pulling at the
front and he to spent most of the time in the small ring. Mike is very strong
and can spin a 42-15 at 27mph, which as Chip mentioned we were doing in spots.

It should be noted that this was a group ride and at every stop we were ALL
back together again as a whole group. The second group always showed up in a
minute or two.

While some folks this lead group had difficulties on the hills we always
waited at the top to ensure no one got dropped reformed our pace line back to
Pete's house. So Pete's goals were met, we all had a long ride and no one was
dropped and each group finished together.

Lastly I would like to thank Pete for putting this together and for arranging
such a nice day.

Ditto on the tahnk you, Pete... When's the next one???? Are inviting
Davis Phinney? Claudio Chiapucci? Andy Hampsten? :-)

Charlie was right on about the ride... Personally, my small ring
didn't seem small enough at the end!
