2514.0. "Ride-Log software for IBM pc's" by BALMER::MUDGETT (smoldering stupidity) Thu Mar 25 1993 15:16

Greetings friends,

If you read last months Bicycling mag. There was a article on software
for cycling (yah I know don't we get enough of this computer stuff at
work?!) Anywho it said (in effect) the best diary/bicycle log/whatever
is a piece of shareware called Ride-Log. I whined for a while in
IBMPC_SHAREWARE to see if someone else had it and no luck. So I went ahead
and BOUGHT the demo version. It looks like a winner. It is fairly easy
to use and uncomplicated. Anyways I don't have a public dir. on the system
in our office if one of you'se does or wants a copy sent to you I can.

Fred M.

P.S. It showed that I have made wonderful progress this month with my
average speed going from 8.9 mph to 10.2! It could be a looong year
at this rate.

Got information on how others can get the software. If its not too expensive
I may just buy it out right.

    Fred,

Shouldn't you be out there fixing something?

I'd be interested, I'll share with Tom in the previous Note
too if we can work something out...

Greetings,

r.2 As a matter of fact Robert I just might be too busy
sending calls back to you all to have someone else cover them:-}

I'll get the address of the shareware people and put it in here.
They said it was okay to put the software on the net however.
The Demo cost $3.00 for them to cover mailing and the floppy
and the full version is $15.00.

    Hi All!
I've been looking for a piece of software that would track mileage,
pulse, weather etc, and also be able to produce some reports.
    Is this the unit??
How flexible is it? Is it just DOS or is also Windows? How can I get
    a copy?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

How do I get this Software? Is there an address or phone number
available that I can order through?

    Thanks again,

Greetings friends,

Sorry for not getting back to you all. In an attempt to fully cover
all the excuses for why I haven't done anything I'll list those
excuses:

1. I've been very busy (you know the tip of the Spear).

2. I have .zipped the files into a zip file. This file I was able to
get on a local VMS system that has a world readable directory. Tragically
the fellow who donated the dir can't get the danged protection right.

So in a word, though I have the and the author says its okay to distribute
that demo freely...I can't seem to get it going! In an attempt to do
"the right thing" (hahahahaah isn't that an old-fashioned way of thinking!
I'll give you what I have so you can order the stuff yourself. Meanwhile
I'll send it to anyone who has a directory that is open to a write...

They want $3.00 for the demo version or $15.00 for the production? version
of the suff.

Greetings all,

Well I guess all my whining has done some good! I have a address for the
ride-log.zip. EOT::AMIGA:[UPLOAD] remember to use spool copy to get it
over and it was built with PKZIP. And all the usual goofy PC-related
problem apply. Send me mail if you have problems.

Someone may want to move this to an MS-DOS archive site. EOT:: is for
Amiga software, and people will expect that it would run on an Amiga (which is
not MS-DOS based).

But Amiga's can also run MSdog software with any number of emulators
    (hardware or software). ;')

I added a RIDELOG.TXT file to EOT:: explaining it is an MSDog program.

I spoke to the author of Ride-Log last night on the telephone.
Dave is very personable and quite interested in pleasing everyone.
He works as a VAX and microVAX system manager for Caterpillar
so really perked up when he heard I was from DEC.

He told me the "phone had been ringing off the hook" in the
last day and I explained that perhaps the DEC Bicycle NOTES
file was the reason. He was VERY happy to hear about that. As
I described the content of this string, he offered the following
that he wanted me to share with you NOTErs.

The Bicycle Magazine article mentioned in .0 was written by
an author familiar with the folks at Bragg Computer Services
mentioned in .6. Dave was somewhat miffed that HIS name and
company (DWS Software) was never mentioned. Bragg can only
supply the demo disk. You have to go to Dave for working copy
as he puts personal data into each copy to prevent someone from
uploading the program to a BBS. He says this strategy has worked.

If you want the working copy, send your check for $15 to:

    	David W. Stambaugh
    	DWS Software
    	1510 Sunset
    	Washington, ILL 61571

With your order you need to supply the following information:

    	Name
    	Address
    	Phone number
    	Type of diskette you desire

Along with the above you can mention any features you would like
him to consider for the next revision based on what you saw
with the demo. He is working on V3 which he is targeting for
release in Dec/Jan. His upgrade policy is that you send him your
"original" diskette with a return mailer and he will send the
upgrade. It will cost approximately $6 (never more than HALF
    	the original, he says).

If you have further questions feel free to call him at:

    	309-444-2497 between 5 and 10PM Central Time

    	George

2514.12Couldn't unzip the fiileJURA::PELAZ::MACFADYENIt should be illegalThu Apr 22 1993 08:168
I copied the file mentioned in .8 or whatever onto local VMS and thence to
my PC. However I couldn't unzip the zip file. PKUNZIP could see three files
in the zip file but "didn't know how to handle" them. I have V1.1 of PKUNZIP
dating from 3/90 - do I need a later version or is something else wrong?
I am not a PC guru...

Rod,

I ran into the same problem you did because I was using the same older version
of PKUNZIP as you were. Once I got the latest version of PKUNZIP, it ran fine.

I'm sorry I can't help you get the software - someone in my group copied
it from their system onto a diskette and then onto my system from there.

Greetings,

How to get the PKUNZIP cooking. This is pretty much a essay in what a
pain the keester PC stuff can be and why some people NEVER upgrade
anything on PC's. I love the old addage that goes "in the computer
buisness you can have, cheap, fast, or easy, pick two."

1. PKZIP2*.EXE is the magic file that you will need to get from
somewhere but is available on the net.

2, The home of most shareware is MORTAL::IBMPC_SHAREWARE. This
file in particular is mentioned in 1631.48.

3. The best repositories of shareware for some odd reason are always
on ULTRIX systems and this is just a little peculiar to get copied over.
The PKZIP.exe for example has to be gotten thusly...

MY VAX> spool copy sttng::"/pub/msdos/pkz204g.exe" pkz204g.exe

Then you need to kermit this .exe file over to your PC. Once you
run it it creates PKZIP, PKUNZIP and Documentation.

4. Then you have to similarly copy the .zip file over to your PC
and run PKUNZIP on it. After working with robust, well thoughtout and
EXPENSIVE systems all day this seems like a real mess but tragically
its the way cheap (and in alot of cases good) software can get moved
around. If its any consolation to you there are two people in my office
who I look up to. Both of these guys weaseled out of getting the software
off the net. "Ahhhhh common Fred," they said,"just get me the disk."
