2495.0. "Mt bikes on snow" by NQOPS::THIBODEAU () Mon Feb 15 1993 18:08

I thought I would start a note on MT biking in the snow. It seems to me
to be the best time for some really funny wipe outs. Last saturday
afternoon I went out with a friend in about 4-5 inches of crusty stuff
and It felt like we were driving up Mt Washington, I'd say I couldn't
go 100 yards without stopping to rest. Any way on the way back we were
jumping snowbanks and did a few real funny end-overs without pain
    because of the snow.

Anyway I have been out a few times this winter and the bike handles
pretty good on hardpack, ice is real tricky but like skiing if you just
don't try to do much on it and wait until your on something better you
can handle it. It all adds a bit of a challenge to the sport.

So lets here some good stories.

Crazy, huh? How many times did I watch you "eat snow".
I think you have "tire chain" envy!

Anyhow Rich and I wander the country side, freezing our rears,
practice yelling "whoops" and "that hurt". No glory, just too much
invested in the bikes to leave them idle.

I enjoy it a lot, but more as an enforced "mellow" ride to enjoy the
view. Most of the places where snow riding is even remotely possible
this time of year are the lower-elevation logging roads. These tend
to be rutted and frozen, but with a little soft stuff on top they're
fun. Falls tend to hurt a lot, though, so I take it pretty easy.

I'm using a dart front/storm control rear that works well. I'm also
trying to figure how to get brakes to work more reliably in snow.
    Any comments?

sure, first you go out on a day when the temp is about 10F, run through
a couple of streams and then try the brakes. I can reliably say that
they will be as smooth as glass. :)

going slow today so I missed an attept by someone to fly trough the air
(well, they really were trying to make it through a snow bank).

every group of riders should have a camcorder to capture the fun times.

did you know that wet deep snow is impossible to ride in? But hiking
in it for a half mile is a nice warm up.

2495.6Winter Riding TOLKIN::HILLMon Mar 01 1993 18:0314
A ride through the woods in the winter is great. I have been to the
Willowdale State forest in Ipswich a number of times. Hunting season
restricted where one can ride. Most times out the
snow has been hard, and the riding was good, like riding in sand. (I have
a couple of extra years so I don't do anything risky).

I find there is a certain speed on ice which allows control. To slow
and it is all over, to fast and no control.

This past weekend I went and the snow was to soft. I kept digging in
and stopping. I sank in so deep, I could sit on my bike and the snow
would keep it up. I had my tires down to minimal air, no improvement.
