2493.0. "Mt. Wachusetts '93" by YNGSTR::BROWN () Thu Feb 11 1993 16:54

    Mt. Wachusetts is doable up the southern exposure back way
    (Westminster/AdministrationRds) without having to get
    off the bike, and another way is almost as good (EchoLake/Admin).
    Some pavement on the former is showing, but most of it is
    thinly packed snow, so mtn bike plus good "biting" rear tire
    still mandatory (besides, all of the backroads to get there are
    virtual beaches). The evening skiers gave me some strange looks.
    Do it quick: more snow coming this weekend.

    Doable (again) to the top without getting off the bike, provided:
     you go up Admin Rd (no Echo Lake Rd option yet)
     you have a mtn bike
     you have a rear tire that's good in snow

    Didn't even need the NightSuns anymore.

anyone have any idea if the paved road is doable by road bike yet?
2493.3MSBCS::BROWN_LMon Apr 12 1993 15:3913
    Well, define "paved".
    The classic road up will be blocked by snow for several more
    weeks, but there is a "road" on the south side of the mountain
    that offers a way up virtually year round.

    If you go one mile south (on Mountain Rd) of the ranger hq and turn
    turn right up Westminster Rd, and go for about a mile til you get to
    the windmills, there is an old road called "Administration Road"
    (it's the middle gate). It's clear of snow now. The road is
    crumbled pavement in a few places, but nothing that a road bike
    can't handle. In any event, it is no worse that some of the
    crumbled beaches... er, backroads, used to get to the mountain.

    The road should be plowed now. Wachusett ski area has closed. They
    usually plow the road on the 15th, unless the ski area wants to pay
    a fine to stay open longer.
2493.5try this...MSBCS::BROWN_LTue Apr 20 1993 14:559
    The usual "car" route still has a 4-5' wall of snow as of 4/19.

    FWIW: for those with suspended mtn bikes that like the rush of high
    speed decents over less than ideal terrain: go down the old
    Administration Rd from gate to gate (where it joins the auto road
    circa 1700' asl to where it comes out on Westminster Rd circa 1000'
    asl) WITHOUT touching your brakes until the end. Beats the 600' drop
    on the road from the Ranger's Hq to the ski resort in altitude drop
    (and smile width). But have real good brakes just in case.
2493.6The paved roads are clear of snow, watch out for sand and debris...HANNAH::SMITHMichael J. Smith: DSG1-1/K8Mon Apr 26 1993 11:0111
Yesterday, Sunday 4/25/93, there was no problem getting through the paved roads.
A few wet spots at the trail crossings is all the snow litter that is left.
If it snows again all bets are off.

The "up" road is heavily sand covered and there was lots of junk on the "down"
road near the ski trails. The sand was applied by the ski area folks when they
plowed the road last March in order to get heavy equipment to the top to repair
the ski lift.

The plowing and sanding ended most of the cross country skiing on the back of
the mountain and now the sand is a serious hazard to biking.

     Okay, I'm gonna ask for the rest of the masochists out there...

     Do we want reinstate the honor race up the Mt this season and post our
    time here in this note?

     I've gone up twice since May 1 with yesterday being 6 minutes faster
    for my entire 25 mile round trip. I didn't track my climbing time
    because I wasn't in the mood to be depressed - IT STILL HURTS!!!!!
