                    Raposo Sets Controversial 24-Hour Record

(Copied w/o permission from VeloNews, Volume 21, Number 17)

Nancy Raposo, winner of the 1990 Race Across AMerica,

squeaked out a national record-breaking, 24-hour road ride,

in Wharton State Forest, New Jersey, on September 21-22.

Raposo, 35, broke the women's record set by Anna Schwartz,

28, in May of this year, riding 439.65 solo, unpaced miles -

          to Schwartz's 436.3 miles.

A note of controversy emerged when a protest was lodged

regarding Raposo's use of feeds from motorized vehicles as

she rode the 17-mile circuit. Schwartz had used hand ups

from a runner, and newly revised Ultra Marathon Cycling

Association rules had disallowed feeds from a moving

vehicle. Raposo never received a copy of the updated rules

from the UMCA, and thus operated under the older rules.

However, the UMCA, while allowing both women to claim a

24-hour record, announced that Raposo's distance would have

to be surpassed for an undisputed new record, and the older

rule allowing feeds from vehicles would stand. UMCA

executive director Michael Shermer stated, "Thus, de facto,

Raposo is the women's 24-hour champion even though Schwartz

may claim she rode her record under slightly different

          rules."

A further bitter note followed Raposo's ordeal: Upon

returning to Rhode Island and reporting for work on

September 28, she discovered that she had been laid off her

job at Raytheon, a defense contractor.

For those of you interested in the National Points Challenge, the

          **************

Our congratulations to these superb athletes!!!

***************************

While this is NOT a regular issue of Ultra Cycling, I will take a
moment to hit on a few things...

1. We are currently at 97 members on our e-mail group here. It
conitnues to grow. I'm glad to see so many UMCAers (as well as
other interested users) on the infobahn.

2. If you have not sent in your renewal for '95, please do so
promptly. All memberships (except Life Memberships) expired on 31
Dec 1994. Don't miss out on the action!

3. The next issue of Ultra Cycling will go out in 2-2.5 weeks. It
is just about ready to go to press. It's going to be huge----80 or
more pages. Included in it are the most extensive UMCA Events
Directory we've ever had, plus the updated and revised UMCA Record
Book. Never mind that it is overflowing with great articles!!

4. If you know of any events that should be in the Directory,
please e-mail them to me PRONTO or fax info to me at 806.499.3210.
I can still squeeze in a few more. We stand at about 250 events
right now.

5. The new Record Attempt Rules Packet is almost done (finally).
If you have any plans toward setting a record in 1995, please
contact me for a copy of the RARP. This supersedes all previous
rules publications.

6. Overall, your response to the new format of the magazine has
been very favorable. We appreciate all of your words of
encouragement!!

7. The free Airoshields will be going out with the March-April
issue, along with the UMCA Membership Survey. Because of Postal
Regulations governing bulk-rate mail, all parcels must be the same
size AND weight; after all of the renewals have come in, I can then
assemble these parcels (they will be mailed in large envelopes) so
we can save a few dollars on the postal bill (which, by the way,
went up about 12% on bulk mailings).

......

Well, that's about it for now. I'm getting carried away here, and
turning this into a Mini-Ultra anyway. There will be another
communication in January, just before the magazine goes into the
mail.

Has anyone seen Old Man Winter yet? We were riding in shorts this
week, and my rose bushes are sprouting new leaves. No complaints
here!
