2436.0. "NEW COMPONENT QUESTION" by EMDS::BROWER () Fri Oct 16 1992 14:14

Hi all...

     I've been reading this notes file for some time now and its been
great to learn answers to questions I have now, had in the past, or may
have in the future. I'm a avid mountain biker who bikes a lot in upstate
New York and Vermont. I ride a Haro extreme comp, deore DX/XT and Mavic
components. It's an elevated chainstay frame and I love it.

    Now that I've introduced myself I'll get on with my question. My
girlfriend just purchased a '93 Trek 830. It's an excellent intro to
serious offroad biking. My question/statement is that Shimano has come
out with a new component grouppo called Altus. I'm pretty sure it replaces
the old pre Deore grouppo. The quality is much better than before,
which may justify the '93 version costing more than the '92. Much
more metal alloy is used rather than plastic. The brake levers and brakes
are much more like Deore and rapidfire plus shifting is included.

    Does anyone have any info/comments about Shimano's new line?

         Thanks,   KAGE B.

2436.1Nuovo AltusMOVIES::PAXTONLooking down on eaglesFri Oct 16 1992 15:033
    No info on the new ones, but I have a 1981 road-machine that came
    with Shimano Altus equipment. Will Campag bring out a nuovo Nuovo
    Record ?

The Altus replaced the Exage 300-500 line (Not the Deore). Shimano is still
doing the Deore LX, XT and the XTR.

2436.3Altus -vs- ExageEMDS::BROWERFri Oct 16 1992 17:593
    I knew Altus did not replace Deore just what I call pre-Deore
    components or Exage. I still feel this Altus stuff is much better than
    any Exage groupo. By the way, what happened to Deore DX?
2436.4Gruppo, not groupoNQOPS::CLELANDCenterline violation...Sat Oct 17 1992 16:0321
    	Shimano's lineup still contains the DX group, with the addition
    	of the XTR group, which is an upgraded version of XT. The "R"
    	stands for Racing.

    	If I could be so bold, please allow me to offer some constructive
    	text regarding the term, "group"?

    	There are no such words as "groupo", or "grouppo". Unless of course
    	people actually use them!! |8^() !!!

    	These are mostly American derivations of the term, "gruppo", which
    	was coined by Campagnolo. I believe this is Italian for "group"?

    	Anyone who speaks Italian would be able to correct me here. (Anyone
    	have an English/Italian dictionary?)

    	So please, say "group", or "gruppo". {8^))>

    	(But what about the constitutional right to free speech?)

    	OK then, say grouppo, what the heck...

    There is an article in the October issue of Bicycling regarding the
    Shimano new group, proupo or grupo
