2434.0. "HLO2 bike rack removed" by RICKS::FEASTER (Bill...225-6259...HLO2-3/C11) Thu Oct 15 1992 20:11

The bike rack on the left side of the HLO2 entrance (as you go in) has been moved.
When I tracked it down yesterday to retrieve my lock, there were four other locks
still on it. If you want your locks back, the rack is near the HLO1 loading dock,
next to the security booth. The word is that the rack will be moved back
sometime, but it is unclear when.

It really irked me to show up at work on my bike and find that I had nothing to
lock it up with. I managed to convince security to let me put my bike behind the
security desk while I went in search of the lock.

But it really wasn't the inconvenience that bothered me most. What really
bothered me was the reason I was given for why the rack was moved. I was told
they moved it because of the Fab groundbreaking ceremony. Now the rack wasn't
anywhere near the location of the ceremony, and it wasn't in the way of people
entering and leaving the building, so all I can surmise is someone thought the
rack was ugly. Wouldn't it be nice if we could be *proud* of providing facilities
for bike-commuting, instead of worrying that they might be considered
unsightly?!!? It's great to come in to work in the summer and see two bike
racks almost completely full of bikes. We need to be promoting bike-
commuting, not hiding it as much as possible.

OK, off the soapbox now. If you want your lock, and need better directions for
finding it, let me know. It is exposed to rain, so locks that rust may not
last long in the current location.

   If you want to be impressed, you should see the Stanford University
   campus during the day during the academic year.

   I've never seen so many bikes leaning up against buildings and railings...

   But we're in the northeast, where security has bizarre notions
   about bicycles. (and where the weather sucks, admittedly...)

2434.2Bike racks stink anyway.VO2MAX::DELORIEAI've got better things to do.Fri Oct 16 1992 12:056
Well, if they are so aware of how ugly a bike rack is, they are aren't they, why
don't they put in some bike lockers!

Bike racks... We don't need no stinking bike racks.
