2393.0. "conversion from 7-speed to 8-speed" by STAR::ZIELONKO () Tue Aug 25 1992 16:31

i am buying a new frame which will be spread for 8 speed where my old frame was
not. my goal is to roll over as much of my equipment from my old frame as
possible. recently i heard that, because 8-speed chains are so narrow, you have
to get new cranks cuz the 8-speed chain can fall between the chainrings. the
person that told me this showed me a campy crank with an "8V" stamped on it
signifying that it was for 8-speed. he said he went to a machine shop and had
them take off 3mm from the inside face of the part of the spider against which
the inner chainring butts.

i would imagine there are plenty of you out there who've gone through this.
exactly what did you do?

2393.1I did the same thing, without special equipmentCIMNET::MJOHNSONMatt JohnsonTue Aug 25 1992 17:053
    At least the Shimano system doesn't require any special crank, chain,
    cogs, or anything but the right spacers (between cogs) and the 8-speed
    freehub itself.

 Doesn't the Shimano 8-speed require 130 mm dropouts? Where the 7-speed
 worked with 126 mm ones.
2393.3NOT TRUE (IN MY EXPERIENCE)WMOIS::GIROUARD_CTue Aug 25 1992 18:248
     I think that's an old wives tale... I have the old Campy crankset
    (pre-8spd cassette) and did nothing and have had no problems with
    anything like that in a season and a half - I ran down tube 8 spd
    shifters for a 1/2 season and have been on my Ergos all this season.

     I haven't even dropped my chain...

    The Shimano hub is designed to easily spread the 126mm dropouts
    when you install it. No permanent bending is necessary.

    	This topic has already been started, #2256.

    	Someone even tried to restart it at topic #2333.
    	The author didn't know that the topic had already been started.

    	But what the heck, Every topic in this conference has been restarted
    	at least half a dozen times, why should 8-speed conversion be any
    	different?

    	Awww, friggit...
