2385.0. "Shimano freehub problem" by TINCUP::MFORBES (It's NOT your father's Chevy Vega) Tue Aug 18 1992 15:17

I have an Ultegra casette setup on my Trek that had developed a squeeling problem.
It squeels after coasting right when I start pedaling again. It doesn't always
do it and will go away after pedaling for a few seconds.

In an attempt to fix the problem, I have cleaned and lubed the chain. removed
and cleaned the casette, tried a different casette, and replaced/cleaned/lubed
the hub bearings.

The only thing that I can think of is that maybe there is an oil port on the
freehub body that I need to squirt some oil (or some other lubricating substance)
into. Is there a way to lube it or should I have overhauled the freehub when I
did the hub bearings?

The wheelset only had about 4k miles on it so I hope that I haven't killed the
freehub due to lack of maintenance.

Thanks,
Mark

If indeed the freehub body is making the noise, here is waht to do.
The best time would have been when you had the axle out.

    1. Remove the cassette cogs.
    2. Remove the axle and bearings.
    3. Insert an 8mm or 10mm (I always forget which) allen wrench into the
freehub from the cog side and loosen the bolt that holds the
        freehub body on.
    4. Place the freehub body (with spoke side facing up) on a rag. You
will notice that if you hold the freehub body you can turn the
inside with your finger. Take out the seal between the two
sections and add a thick oil (such as Phil Wood) where the seal
        was.
    5. Reassemble.
