2380.0. "Ski area/Mt Bikes" by NQOPS::THIBODEAU () Thu Aug 13 1992 23:21

I tried mountain biking last week at Killington, I enjoyed the trip but
found it much different then just going through the woods even on
difficult single track. I think the worst part was how much your hands
hurt, we had to stop to rest our hands not our legs. I also found the
uphill very difficult. I found the gravel roads to be very rough with
a lot of loose rocks, the ski trails that were open were better but
you had to keep an eye out for cross drainage ditchs that would
send you for an end-over if you didn't slow down. Over all is was real
fun with a top speed of 27 mph, average of 9 mph (mostly due to walking
part of the way from Bear Mt up to the Killington area), total miles
    was 21.

What I want to get out of this note is what other mountains use thier
lifts for mountain bikes and what are your impressions of the trails.
I know that Mt Snow and Sunday River allow bikes on thier ski lifts but
I don't know of any others.

Stratton Mt. also offers MTBing daily except wednesdays 10 to 5. I
think the lift ticket is $15. A phone number for information is
    1-802-297-2200.

Many of the ski resorts in California are trying to become summer-time
mountain bike resorts. Mammoth Mountain probably has the biggest
operation. It's about 6 hours from San Francisco, via Yosemite. I
think the current issue of one of the mountain bike magazines discusses
    mountain bike resorts.

In Colorado, the ski areas are part of the National Forest land, so you
are allowed to ride your bicycle up and down any and all of them. I do
know (from the Colorado_bicycling notes conference and other local sources)
that Copper Mountain allows FREE rides with your bike to the top of the
mountain. You can then ride your bike down from there.

Winter Park also allows you to ride UP the chairlift, but for a fee, and
I do not know the cost.

Check out the notes conference TYFYS::COLORADO_BICYCLING for other details.
