I'm signed up to go to GEAR, in fact I'm biking to it!

I've recevied the following email on GEAR.

Subj:	GEAR 92 North Country will soon be here!

Plans for GEAR 92 North Country a going along full speed! We now
have over 1000 registrants with new registrations coming in
torrents. The Canton Bicycle club has developed 27 different
tours with a combined length of over 1000 miles. One of our
tours crosses over into Canada via the Cape Vincent NY and
Kingston Ont ferries. The cycling in this area is absolutely
magnificent. Contrary to popular belief, the terrain around
Canton NY, particularly in the direction of the St Lawrence river
18 miles distant, is mostly light rolling hills to almost flat.
The high peaks of the Adirondacks are mostly to the south and
southeast of Canton about 90 miles distant.

Our educational program involves over 30 different presentations,
mostly on cycling related topics. However we also have several
presentations on local history and geology. We even have one
presentation in FRENCH on French-Canadian culture in New York
state. We also intend to have French speaking volunteers in our
hospitality to greet our Quebec guests.

The entertainment should be the best ever for a GEAR!

The St Lawrence Office of Conference Services has also made
provisions to permit participants to arrive early or stay longer
and take meals in our dining halls for a very nominal fee. We
can also help with routes to and from Canton for those
individuals or groups who are cycling partly or all the way to
the GEAR.

Anyone desiring info about GEAR 92 North Country should contact
me at the address below. Hope to see you in August!

Subj:	GEAR 92 NORTH COUNTRY UPDATE-RIDE DESCRIPTIONS

Following are the narrative descriptions of the GEAR 92 North
Country tours as developed by the Canton Bicycle Club.

Number
Length
Designation
Difficulty Level (1=easy, 4=most difficult)
Start location
__________

# 1
5 miles
RONALD'S RIDE
Level 1
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This warm-up ride is the "everybody can do it" loop of the annual
Ronald McDonald ride which takes place in the fall. This is a good
ride for children and for the child in you. It will begin at
Augsbury and end at McDonald's Restaurant on Main Street in Canton.
__________

# 2
Variable distances
OFF ROAD RIDES
Unrated
SUNY Canton

On the campus of the State University College of Technology at
Canton are over 9 miles of cross country ski trails which are
excellent for off road cycling. Interested ATB riders are invited
to challenge the hills and trails. See your rides packet for details.
__________

# 3
10 miles
TOUR DE CANTON - St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education
Center
Level 1
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This self-guided ten mile ride is almost entirely within the limits
of the village of Canton. It is designed to show off the best (and
some of the rest) of what the village is like. It can serve as a
quick warm-up or cool-down ride if you wish but there may be enough
to hold your interest for a much longer period of time, especially
if you want to take a more leisurely look at some of our
attractions. The streets are all clearly marked and the suggested
route is highlighted on your map of the village so there should be
no trouble following it with or without the use of the cue sheet.
__________

# 4
12.5 miles
PYRITES-MINER ST. RIDE
Level 2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This easy scenic ride takes the rider along the flat to gently
rolling county and town roads between Canton and Pyrites. Road
surface conditions along this tour are generally good to excellent
with little traffic.
__________

# 5
15.8 miles
SYKES RAMBLE
Level 1
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This ride makes a good wake-up or late afternoon ride along flat to
gently rolling town roads to the north and northeast of Canton.
Road surface conditions are good and traffic is light.
__________

# 6
17.2 miles
MINER ST.-IRISH SETTLEMENT RD.
Level 1-2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

Yet another easy ride awaits the cyclist along flat to gently
rolling terrain to the northwest of Canton and along the southern
boundary of the Indian Creek Wildlife Refuge. Road conditions are
good with low traffic volume.
__________

# 7
19.6 miles
CRARY MILLS LOOP
Level 2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center
There are some rolling hills on parts of this route with plenty of
flat portions in between. Stop and watch the waterfowl on the left
just before you get to NY 68 at mile 13.6. Roads are good to
excellent.
__________

# 8
22.9 miles
MORLEY-BUCKS BRIDGE-WEST POTSDAM LOOP
Level 1-2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This easy essentially flat ride takes you along the Grasse River
through Morley to Bucks Bridge, then to West Potsdam and back to
Canton through prime farmland. In Morley and West Potsdam there
are country stores. In Morley there is a tavern and if you turn
left at mile 6.6 a short detour will take you to an interesting
old Episcopal church and graveyard. Near Bucks Bridge you will
find a farm market. Some stretches of this route can be windy but
it is still a good route for a laid back ride.
__________

# 9
26.3 miles
FOOTHILLS LOOP
Level 2-3
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

Rolling all the way this loop takes you along the edge of the
foothills of the Adirondacks. There is a maximum elevation gain of
around 500 feet but remember, what goes up must come down. This is
rural country and except for the Turnpike Tavern at mile 12.8
(which may or may not be open) there are no services on this
route until you get to Langdon Corners at mile 20.2. If you turn
right at mile 15.7 onto Coon Rd., a side trip of a half mile each
way will take you to Maple Leaf Farm, a good place to get genuine
maple syrup and maple cream.
__________

# 10
27.8 miles
INDIAN CREEK
Level 1-2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This easy scenic ride takes the rider along the flat to gently
rolling county roads between Canton and Rensselaer Falls and
completely around the Indian Creek Wildlife Refuge. Points of
interest include an overlook affording a good view of the wildlife
refuge, the Indian Creek Nature Center, Trinity Chapel at Morley,
constructed in 1868, and one of the few grist mills remaining in
the county. There are several Amish farms between miles 12 and 15.
Deer and waterfowl are found in abundance in the woods and marshes
along this route. Road surface conditions along this tour are
generally good to excellent with little traffic.
__________

# 11
30.7 miles
RUSSELL LOOP
Level 3
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This ride offers a variety of terrain from flat to moderately hilly
and some nice scenery and takes you through the communities of
Pyrites, Russell and Hermon. At mile 11.5 you begin a nice 3.2 mile
downhill coast ending up in Russell where there is a country store.
Between miles 13 and 17 you will see the Russell Cheese Factory.
It doesn't look like much but the cheese (and cheese curd) is
delicious. As you enter Hermon there is an interesting cemetery
and in the middle of the village you will find a store and a
tavern. You might consider taking along your bathing suit and
stopping for a swim at Taylor Park just before you get back to
Canton.
__________

# 12
31.3 miles
Raquette River Loop
Level 4
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This ride takes you over the hills from the Grasse River valley to
the Raquette River valley at Hannawa Falls and back by way of the
crossroads community of Pierrepont. It is one of the more
challenging of our middle distance rides. None of the hills is
really formidable but several are more than gentle rises.
You may wish to pause in Crary Mills (mile 6.6) at the Crary Mills
Mighty (think small) Mall or visit the shop of one of our local
potters. After you cross the river in the village of Hannawa Falls
(mile 16 ) there are a couple of stores and as you leave the
village you will come to the entrance to Postwood Park, a good
place for a picnic lunch or a swim. The area around Pierrepont is
world famous for some of its crystal deposits. The descent down
Waterman Hill is fast and fun but caution is advised.
__________

# 13
32.6 miles
EASY HALF METRIC
Level 2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This scenic moderate ride makes a loop east of Canton. A few
modest hills are spread throughout this ride. Otherwise, quiet
country roads, farms and stone fences make this perfect for an
early morning or mid-afternoon half metric outing. Stores or
formal rest places are scarce on this route.
__________

# 14
36.2 miles
PEDAL AND PADDLE
Level 1-2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

A short ride takes you to Kendrew Corners where flat water canoeing
awaits you on the Oswegatchie River. This ride will be available
both Saturday and Sunday. Canoes are available on a first come
first serve basis beginning at 10 am each day. Flotation devices
will be provided and must be worn by all participants while
canoeing.
__________

# 15
39.6 miles
SOUTH COLTON LOOP
Level 3-4
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This ride ascends into the Adirondack foothills making a loop
through the villages of South Colton and Colton which lie just
outside the Adirondack State Park. The terrain is mostly hilly
with a few challenging longer climbs. A short detour (turn right
by the library at mile 26) will take you to one of the best kept
secrets in the area--the Stone Valley Hiking Trail (sorry, no
bicycles)--developed jointly by the Town of Colton, Niagara Mohawk
Power Corporation and the Adirondack Mountain Club. The trail
extends four miles or so along both sides of the 162 mile long
Raquette River (one of the most dammed rivers in America) with its
many cascades and waterfalls and the ruins of a 19th century
tannery. Therefore, you can hike for as short or as long a time as
you wish. Another stopping point at mile 31 provides a long view
across the St. Lawrence River Valley from atop the hills of
Pierrepont. From there, the descent to Canton on NY 68 is
enjoyable and fast but requires caution because of hills, curves
and narrow shoulders.
__________

# 16
40.2 miles
TOOLEY POND LOOP
Level 3-4
Remote start, 9:30am at Town's General Store in Degrasse south of
Canton on County 27.

One of the most beautiful wilderness trips for which the Adirondack
Park is known. You may hear some loons, but will not hear the
thumping of quails which usually occurs in the spring. Part of
this ride follows the Oswegatchie River which can also be seen
farther north on some of the other GEAR rides. Deer are usually
seen along the route as well as many birds. Binoculars might be a
good addition to your bag for this ride. Note: Parts of Tooley
Pond are UNPAVED with several short but severe hills. This tour is
recommended ONLY for intermediate and advanced riders.
__________

# 17
41.5 miles
JOE INDIAN LOOP
Level 4
Remote start, 9:00 AM at the Colton-Pierrepont Central School, just
north of Colton on NY 56.

This trip has many beautiful vistas typical of the Adirondack Park
and a spectacular view from White Hill of the St. Lawrence River
Valley and over into Canada. There are no services between South
Colton and Parishville and there is considerable climbing so a good
supply of water is necessary.
__________

# 18
44.4 miles
CHURCH RIDE
Level 1-2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This easy scenic ride takes the cyclist to a series of historic
churches and church yards between Canton and Waddington on the St.
Lawrence River. This tour will pass sites of Morley, Bucks Bridge,
Waddington and Chipman. The topography is light rolling and very scenic.

__________

# 19
47.8 miles
WADDINGTON-SEAWAY LOOP
Level 1
Remote start, 9:30am at town park in Waddington

Even though the terrain on this loop is essentially flat, you
should sill allow a full day for this tour since not only is it
moderately long, but also there are lots of things to see and do
along the way. If you choose any of the detours, they will add
several miles to the trip. It begins at Waddington 19 miles from
Canton on the St. Lawrence River where that community's Homecoming
Weekend with many activities will be underway. The route follows
the river, passing by Coles Creek State Park (day use is free for
bicycle riders). The view of the St. Lawrence River from the beach
at Coles Creek is spectacular. At mile 11.6, you have the option
of detouring to Wilson Hill Island and the Wildlife Refuge Area
with its nature trail and good spots for observing waterfowl. At
mile 21, you can take a recommended detour into the Eisenhower
Lock-Barnhart Island area of the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes Seaway
(America's fourth coast) where you can see ships transitting a
lock, ride your bicycle under it, picnic and swim at Robert
Moses State Park (day use is free for bicycle riders) and take in
the Seaway Visitors Center. You get all this for 8 or so miles in
addition to the basic tour. As you leave the Seaway area you come
somewhat unexpectedly upon a reasonably good sized shopping mall.
The route then circumnavigates the village of Massena, the largest
community in the county. At mile 27.4, there is a good bakery
(not open on Sunday) and at Chase Mills (mile 40.2) there is an inn
with lots of atmosphere. This and several other places along the
way may find favor with you if you are hot and thirsty.

REMINGTON RIDE
Level 1-2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This ride and companion on-campus workshop have been planned with
special care to provide a comprehensive look at the 19th century
artist Frederic Remington who was a native of Canton. The tour
leads riders to the St. Lawrence River community of Ogdensburg for
a tour of the Remington Museum which displays one of the world's
finest collections of Remington's paintings, sketches and
sculptures. Upon return to Canton by way of some of St. Lawrence
County's prime farmland, the tour will pass Remington's birthplace
and boyhood home and will visit his gravesite in the beautiful
Evergreen Cemetery just outside Canton. Incidentally, Irving
Bachellor, another Canton native and author of the first bestseller
of the 20th century, is also buried there. There is a nominal fee

A hilly but very scenic ride along the back roads of the foothills
of the Adirondack Mountains. The Canton Bicycle Club takes this

done so since the inception of the Club. The restaurant at
Whipperwill Corners has become a traditional resting spot for many
of the cyclists who have taken part in the CBC Fall tour.

PLUMBROOK METRIC LOOP
Level 2
St. Lawrence University-Augsbury Physical Education Center

This metric century, with a few moderate hills passes through
Potsdam, the only town of any size on the route. From about mile
15 to mile 23 riders can see several good examples of the pink to
reddish Potsdam sandstone that was used in constructing homes and
other buildings during the early days of settlement. Attractive
and well kept homes are seen along parts of this ride which follows
quiet country roads almost exclusively. At mile 34.6, a 3.4 mile
detour will take you to Amish Country Farms Cheese Factory Outlet
and Amish crafts store in Plumbrook. From mile 37.4 to mile 46,
the Raquette River can be seen from time to time. There are
several country stores and many scenic areas along this route.

# 25

KINGSTON VELO ROUTE
Level 1-2
Remote start, 7:30am at the Guardino school in Clayton NY.

This is a truly exotic tour which makes two international border
crossings, includes two islands, and four ferries. The scenery is
spectacular. The tour takes the rider on both the US and Canadian
sides of the St. Lawrence River. Several interesting and
worthwhile communities will be encountered along the route. On the
US side, one may visit Alexandria Bay, Clayton and the Cape Vincent
area. On the Canadian side, the major metropolitan areas of
Kingston and Gananoque are definitely worth the trip. The whole
area is entirely devoted to the tourist trade and as such offers
numerous opportunities for excellent cycling on paved shoulders
the norm. Except for the bridges between Ivy Lea, Ontario and
Alexandria Bay, NY, there is only one major hill, just outside and
east of Kingston on Ontario Highway 2. A note of caution! Being
a high tourist area, the traffic along NY 12 and Ontario Highway 2
can become quite heavy, therefore, one should exercise extreme
caution at all times!

SPECIAL NOTE ON CROSSING THE US-CANADIAN BORDER

US and Canadian citizens should bring some sort of photo ID. NON
US/Canadian citizens MUST bring their passports and visa papers for
re-admission to the US.

fascinating scenery, history, geography and geology of the
southwestern section of St. Lawrence County. Ten miles are ridden
on the hills overlooking Black Lake. From there
the route descends into the rocks and swamps of Rossi over 10+
miles of winding, narrow, and hilly roads. The area was once on
active mining area with iron furnaces and a munitions factory.
Rossi was visited by US Presidents Monroe and Cleveland when it was
in its heyday. The trip returns through the Amish farm country of
Depeyster and Heuvelton. Roads are generally good to excellent.
Small stores are located in Heuvelton, Edwardsville, Hammond, Pope
Mills and Depeyster.

are few places for water or other provisions along the route, so
stock up when you can.

 SHOWCASE ATTRACTION
8:00 P.M. Midnight
Appleton Arena

8:00-9:45 P.M. Tom Deluca: Hypnotist/Comedian

For those to whom the word "hypnotist" conjures up the image of a
Merlin-type swinging watch with an evil leer, Tom Deluca will come as a
surprise. Deluca bounds energetically onto the stage looking more like your
favorite homeroom teacher than a sinister molder of minds. In his totally
unique hypnosis show, Deluca combines stand-up comedy with his ability to
hypnotize audience volunteers into doing things such as slipping into Michael
Jackson moon-walks or speaking in a language from another planet. With TV
appearances including CBS and MTV, feature articles in People and Rolling
Stone, Deluca continues to "ZAP" audiences around the country. No capes, no
swinging pocket watches, no spinning wheels, Tom is contemporary, hip, and
very, very funny.

10:00-Midnight Wood's Tea Company: Folk Musicians

This trio tours the country performing for audiences in large concert halls as
well as intimate coffeehouses. Their repertoire comes from the traditional
music of Pete Seeger, Stan Rogers, Bill Staines and Woody Guthrie, as well as
their four albums of traditionally styled works on the Backroads Records
label. Using over a dozen instruments during the course of a show, Rusty
Jacobs, Bruce Morgan and Mike Lussen each bring their individual styles to
every song with excellent instrumentation and beautiful vocal harmonies. As
an added treat, they keep pace between songs with hilarious jokes and
anecdotal stories. The Wood's Tea Company performs as emissaries of the folk
music that is our heritage.

Comedy Night in the Pub
9:00-11:00 P.M.
Northstar Pub, University Center

9:00-10:00 P.M. Larry Sullivan: Comedian/Impersonator
10:00-11:00 P.M. Mark Nizer: Comedian/Juggler

Larry Sullivan's easy-going boyish charm is belied by his sharp social satire
and witty blend of impersonations. He mixes conversational anecdotes about
his home life with impressions of oft-impersonated stars. From a furiously
over-acting William Shatner to a nearly spastic George Bush, Sullivan's body
so perfectly captures physical eccentricities that each impression draws
delightful howls of recognition. Sullivan has been showcased on numerous
television and radio programs including ABC's "America's Funniest People." He
has consistently proven himself to be an original-- a master comedy performer!

Mark Nizer: The Juggler your Mother Warned you about!... has opened for George
Burns, Ray Charles and Bob Hope. Having juggled for over 15 years, Nizer
comes from a strong dance background, stand-up comedy and a love for great
juggling. As he combines original satire, wit and comedy with juggling, "he
is as deft with his tongue as he is with his hands". Nizer has appeared on
several TV shows including "The Arsenio Hall Show," MTV's "Comedy Show" and
Fox-TV's "Comic Strip Live." His standing-room-only shows are real crowd
pleasers-- one of the most uniquely refreshing acts anywhere!

Rock & Roll with The Rocking Horse Band
8:00-11:00 P.M.
Outdoors behind Lee Hall

Remember "This Magic Moment," "Calendar Girl," "Rock Around the Clock," and of
course "Unchained Melodies?" These are just a few of the dozens of '50's and
'60's tunes you'll sing and rock to with this high energy, fun-loving band.
Come hear American Beat at its best from band members who've lived the music!

Coffeehouse Entertainment
9:00-11:00 P.M.
The Gutter, University Center

9:00-10:00 P.M. Barb Heller
10:00-11:00 P.M. Christian Parker

Barbara Heller is a one-woman show performing on acoustic guitar, five-string
banjo and vocals, A delightful collection of original, traditional and
contemporary music--just about anything from American folk songs to oldies
from the '30's and '40's to Irish and Scottish fiddle tunes; some bluegrass
and blues, favorites from the '60's folk era, and always plenty of original
songs. High quality entertainment with a warm and personable musician who
would like nothing better than to share her music with you.

Christian Parker grew up in the North Country where winters start in October
and end in May. When he wasn't playing ice hockey, Parker was crouched over a
turntable listening to his older brother's Beatle records. Pretty soon, an
acoustic guitar replaced the hockey stick, and by the time he was in high
school, Parker was playing gigs and writing songs. His music comes from the
'60's and is heavily influenced by Simon & Garfunkle, the Byrds, and the
Beatles. Now, six years and three albums later ("Reflections of Tomorrow,"
"Through the Darkness" and "Wonderland"), Parker is known region-wide for his
clean guitar picking and understated vocals.

I'll be there too.

Canton, N.Y. is only about 20 miles from the Canadian boarder. It's
the first Gear that will have international rides.

I'll be using it as an excuse to include 2 weeks of touring in the
Adirondacks and Canada, including Ottawa which is the Canadian
Capital and only about 60 miles from Canton.

Having just come back from a 2-week bike tour in Ireland, I need an
other cycling vacation bad. Working for three weeks straight
without a bike tour is very stressful.

"It's the first Gear that will have international rides."

That's good for the press but bad for anyone who went to Gear
International, or was it "Gear Niagara"?, in 1986.
