2349.0. "Help needed for good rides" by MPGS::BROGDEN () Thu Jul 09 1992 22:40

Hi,
I just recently bought a mountain bike and with the exception of a
few short rides on some hills and semi-hard terrain, I haven't had much of
an oppurtunity for some killer rides. What I am looking for is suggestions/
directions/experiences from people who have found good places to ride with
in 45 minutes of Central Ma., Worcester to be specific. I have been told
about the Leominster State Forest and plan to check it out, also Rutland
State Park, but I can't remember how to get there!! So any help would be
appreciated.

I also do road riding as well, so let me know of some good tours for on
the road too.

		Thanks-
		   Tim

Leominster St. Park is on Rt 31, off of 140 in Westminster. Definitely
good for hilly mountain biking. Rutland St. Park is nowhere near as
difficult, however it is still fund and quite large. You can start
at the Rutland St. Park entrance, off of 122 or 122A (look for signs)
in Rutland. It is also approachable on the other end at Barre Falls
Dam, 62 in Barre. For a short, after work technical ride I suggest
Trout Brook part in Holden, Manning St. Single track and swampy.
    Don't forget your bug spray.

If you are looking for a good road rides in central Ma of good
distance, Ride around Quabbin, starting in Rutland. Seven Hills
Wheelmen does this ride in the 90 to 100 mile range. Definite
    rolling hills.

Central MA has some of the most varying, and intesting riding anywhere.
Just pick up a county map and start exploring. Just about any
non-routed road, and routed road outside of Worcester is good. I also
suggest joining a local club ie: Seven Hills Wheelmen and let us find
    you the roads.

For some easier terrain, try the trails around Wachusett Res.

Went out to Rutland State Park yesterday. It's basically dirt
road riding. Some trails had grass on them... The map the
ranger gave us was terrible. We just rode around. Anybody
have a map? The bugs were really bad, but the swim afterwards
    	was really nice.

So far the best place I have found to "kill"
	yourself!

We had a real blast there last Sunday. went to
the Framingham/Sudbury state park this Sunday, not
as many narrow downhills, but still alot of fun.

Even with a map, got hopelessly lost for about
	two hours!

Lots of rocks, and mud! Not too many mosquitoes! The
jury is still out on the poison ivy!

New England Cartographics has a map with Wachusett Mt. on one side and
Leominster State Forest on the other. The Wachusett side is mostly
accurate, I haven't checked the other side. I got mine at New England
Backpacker in Worcester; EMS has it too, but usually only as a set of
    maps.

Okay folks I got what I was looking for. And for those who want to
    know,
at EMS I bought a couple of books. "25 mountain bike tours" and "moun-
tain biking near Boston", both are pretty descriptive and have maps
    etc.

I plan to use them extensively this weekend!!
