2321.0. "SOLID tyres???" by ROCKS::ROBINSON (Twitching the night away...) Mon Jun 15 1992 12:44

I heard recently (on UK radio) about solid tyres (tires) for bikes. I was
initially highly sceptical (skeptical) about this, but the commentator seemed
pleasantly surprised by their performance so maybe they might have a place, at
least for touring/commuting.
These tyres have been trialled in both UK and Canada during the last year and
they are now ready to go into full production. They are made from
poly-something-or-other, are full of air bubbles, fit on a standard rim and last
(according to the manufacturer) 4 times longer than the equivalent tyre/tube
combo, for not a lot more and, of course, no punctures.
Anyone else heard about these?
If these catch on, would it be a case of the wheel coming full circle? ;-)

There was a 'vet' in my club that rode solid tyres for a few years.
His only problem was that he couldn't get them narrow enough (he was
riding 1 3/8 inch wheels). Apart from that, he was happy enough with
them, but I'd advise that only people interested in a very leisurely
    pace, bother...

I've seen a product review somewhere about these tyres. I remember one thing
about them being heavy. Like you said that they are not really solid but have
an almost neoprene quality about the inside of the tyre.

Besides where would you put your oatmeal?
