2301.0. "Race excuses" by MASALA::GGOODMAN (Born Victim) Mon Jun 08 1992 16:07

    	OK, let's all be honest now. How's about posting your worst excuses
    for doing badly in a race.

    	One I heard on a local midweek race was of a rider who had been
    hammered when expected to break the course record. His was that he lost
    a minute after pulling his wheel which made him lose his rythym. No one
    had the guts to point out to him that he was riding vertical drop outs.
    Pull the wheel, and it falls out the frame...

    	One from the Scottish 25 Champs on Sunday that I was timekeeper for
    came from another local rider (Fife produces some whingers*) on how a
    car following his minute man stopped him from breaking the hour (he got
    a 1-0-11). Of course it was asking too much for him to pass the car as
    well, and had nothing to do with the extra stone that he's carrying...

    Graham.

    * WHINGER - (whin'jer) adj. Old Scots word for one who moans a lot.

2301.1FROM MY PERSONAL ARSENALWMOIS::GIROUARD_CMon Jun 08 1992 16:3115
    Although I personally prefer to use the word "explanation" rather than
    excuse, I'll divulge a few of my favorites:

     o Stomach Flu
     o Just tired - Overtrained that week

     o Beer the night before
     o Couldn't thread up - too many squirrels in the pack
     o Missed a shift
     o Pulled too long
     o Just adjusted seatpost, or stem height, or saddle distance, or new
       shoes, or (insert favorite equipment excuse here)
     o Frame of mind bad - didn't want to do the race anyway

2301.2wheel fell offNOVA::FISHERRdb/VMS DinosaurMon Jun 08 1992 17:046
    I knew a fellow who explained, after a poor time trial, that his
    front wheel's quick release hadn't been tight and his wheel fell off.

    I couldn't bring myself to asked how he avoided being bruised.

    I never did well enough in a race to have any form to need to defend
    but my favorites included `Bad eating', `over-training' and `the <expletive>
    of a second cat who won the race had hidden a motor under his saddle'.

    My current favorite (for not racing rather than doing abysmally) is
    that the weather (or workload if the weather is good) doesn't let me
    spend enough time training...

    On a related issue there was also the persistent rumour of the 3rd cat
    (in france there are a lot of 3/4 cat races) who always managed to do
    just enough to not get promoted into 2nd.
2301.4can't use 'age'NOVA::FISHERRdb/VMS DinosaurMon Jun 08 1992 17:094
    Yeah, and it's hard to use 'age' when the 10 guys in front are all
    older.  :-)

2301.5Mysterious punctureMASALA::GGOODMANBorn VictimMon Jun 08 1992 17:347

    	No one ever thrown their spare tub/inner tube over a wall and
    claimed to have punctured. Never used it myself of course, just
    asking... :*)

    Graham.
2301.6Waste of a good excuse...SUSHI::KMACDONALDMon Jun 08 1992 18:036

Came *close* to seeing this one used - in fact the guy's front wheel DID
come off, and he crashed pretty bad, but he caught the pack again and won
the race, so didn't need to use the excuse. Seemed a waste to me :-)

    I have heard it said of a certain international-level downhill ski-er
    that when training (by cycling up Iseran) he would drop to the back of
    the group, then off it and then would mysteriously puncture....
