2284.0. "Announcing the Up Wachusett Honor Bike Race, UWHBR" by HANNAH::SMITH (Michael J. Smith: DSG1-1/K8) Tue May 19 1992 10:13

Announcing the Up Wachusett Honor Bike Race, UWHBR (or the "uh-webur").

The UWHBR is on the honor system. No entry fee, no painted marks on the
route, no date, no t-shirts, no start time, no numbers, no pre-race meeting,
no sag wagon, no juice, no bandaids, no prizes, no officals, no losers,
no nuttin. A helmet is required.

Time yourself on the course and post the results in this file. That is all
there is to it. You can run the course anytime, as many times as you like
and post as many times as you want. The UWHBR racer is on the honor system.

The course starts at the intersection of Mile Hill Road and Bolton road and
ends at the first handicapped parking space on the right in the upper parking
lot at the summit of Wachusett Mountain. The low point is about 911 feet and
the high point is about 2003 feet. Start timing at the low point and stop at
the high point. The total distance is around 4.2 miles.

The course directions are:

Mile 0.0	911 feet

Start timing at the intersection of Mile Hill Road and Bolton Road. A flying
start is fine. There is a manhole cover by the Bolton Road sign that is the
offical starting point.

Mile ~.41	~1070 feet

Proceed on Mile Hill Road past the Wachusett Mountain Ski Area exit. Mile Hill
Road changes its name to Mountain Road at the Westminster/Princeton town line.

Mile ~1.27	~1386 feet

Turn right into the park at the Wachusett Mountain sign and then go right
again through the gate and down the hill. Do not take a time allowance if
the gate happens to be closed. The gate is open from 9 am to dusk.

Mile ~1.8	~1528 feet

Stay on the the "up" road, i.e. pass the "down" road entrance on the left.

Mile ~2.60	~1650 feet

Follow the sign to the Summit, go down the hill, i.e. do not take the cut-off
to the left.

Mile ~4.06	~1920 feet

Go left at the summit sign, watch for bozos in cars coming down and turning
across your path.

Mile ~4.22	~2003 feet

Stop timing at the last rock on the right before the first parking spot on
the right. This is the offical end point. The parking area contains the big
Mount Wachusett State Reservation sign with the park map.

Post your results as a reply to this note and include at least the following:

Anyone know the % of this climb?

2284.5AD::CRANEI'd rather be on my bicycle!Thu May 21 1992 15:2318

I Varies considerably. The start is about a mile of steady 10-12%.
That a guesss by the say. After the first mile you turn right into
the Visitors center and actually have a short downhill section before
the climbing starts again. There is a steep 10-15% section then it
eases for a little before one more steep section that lead to a
downhill sweeping left corner. Then it is easy 3-4% for a while
until you hit the next to last steep section that eases a little and
then turns left to the last 25-30% section to the top.

I used the 39x23 quite a bit dropping to 8 MPH on some of the steep
stuff. I seem to remember hearing that a time trial was held on this
course and the best times were around 16 minutes. I don't know if
they took the cutoff or where the start point was.

2284.6grades11755::MREIDThu May 21 1992 16:2915
Average grade is 7%; John Crane's estimates are fairly accurate.
For comparison, Mt Washington's avg grade is 12%.

The race (actually was a mass start event) always started at the base
ski lodge; the distance from the ski lodge (intersection of the
driveway & Mile Rd) to the top is 3.8 miles. Winning times were low
16's. Dan Massucco has gone under 16:00, and this year I wouldn't be
surprised to see him go sub 15!

The start of this suggested 'notes race' must be about .4 miles down
    from the ski lodge.

I guess it all depends where you start timing.

It took me roughly three and half hours, starting from the lowest point.

Of course, my lowest point was in Maynard....

I did the race the last time they held it (3rd for the old man's
category). There are many factors that will effect your performance.

o Getting to the Mt. versus already being there

o Being pumped for the TT up a mountain

o Wanting to eat up the person in the front of you

o Temperature (especially climbing at full tilt)

Mark's points are right on. The Mt. may look and feel bad, but Mt.
Washington brings a hill grade and climbing experience into a well
grounded perspective. I'm no climber by any means, but I do love

Well Ed, to be perfectly honest I don't use gases of any sort. I find
they leak out too easily when tubes are punctured... I favor oatmeal.
It leaks out very slow and if you begin to bonk you can squirt a little
(I find Schreader valves more conducive for this practice than Prestas)

Oh ouch! I haven't done anything so hard in a long time. This was my first time
up the mountain, and I didn't really know what to expect. Geez, you Noters
really suckered me into this one :-)

I did the climb in the middle of my first-ever century ride (start point is 41
miles from my house in Westford MA). The combination of the 102 mile ride and
the climb made me feel pretty satisfied. On the climb I used my low gear of
40x26 a lot (felt like half of the time). I thought the first mile prior to
getting into the park was hard. Then I saw the steeper grades. I wasn't sure if
I could do it, but for damn sure I didn't want to walk it! I hate to climb
while standing, but unfortunately this was necessary for me quite a lot.

I originally thought about doing it twice: first while reading the directions
to learn the route, and second to really do it. NOT!

    	Advantage - no traffic

Disadvantage - couldn't see ahead of me(this could also
be considered an advantage ;-)), cold, wet,
    		       NO view, just plain miserable.

Felt like turning back twice(about half way up mile hill, and
then at about 3.2 miles when it got really steep again). All
I could think of was... WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING????

First time this year. First time, TIMED. Did it a couple of times
last year and needless to say,... you soon forget how tough it is.

Glad I did it now though... hopefully will try again before the
    year is out.

    Great idea .0!

    Ride origin: Sterling
Ratio: 42-21 most of the steeper sections
Comments: Lot of standing-maybe I need a bigger cog. Actually one
difference from 2 weeks ago is that this time I tried standing with the
19 cog some. Don't know if that helped.

Observation: Previous ride there was a guy rollerblading up the Mtn. I

Comments: John Crane & I took the long way home on our commute from

Karol,

I believe it's Worcester.

With the sign in front of you (12:00) and the tower behind you (6:00).

1:00 is Boston. On a clear day you can see the Pru' and some other tall
		buildings.
