2270.0. "Mass mtn bike routes" by YNGSTR::BROWN () Wed May 06 1992 02:59

This last Sunday, the New England Trailriders Association (?)
had their annual "turkey trot", which was a 75 mile course laid
out in central Mass for dirt bikes. It just so happens that the
route makes an excellent mtn bike tour as well. The route goes
thru at least Clinton, Bolton, back thru Clinton, Sterling, and
came close to Leominster before turning south again (that's where
I quit after about 25 miles). Most of it is offroad on things like
underground gas lines, old railroad beds (including the 1/4 mile
abandoned RR tunnel near the Clinton dam which seems like about 5
miles long when you're halfway thru... it is really dark and creepy!),
and a lot of it is just thru dense woods. It's not clear if there is
tresspassing involved, but the trail does a good job of staying away
from population when it can. Funny part: a lot of dirt bike riders
Sunday didn't have registered bikes; not sure how the local police
departments viewed this when they were on the road sections. The
course is marked with 4" flourescent arrows. It does make a few river
crossings that require a bit of finesse in finding a suitable spot.

re .1 I was sort of hoping somebody else could provide more info
as well, such as a map. The info I learned was from talking to a
dirt bike rider who had stopped to ask about detouring to a food place
while I was riding the back roads up to Mt. Wachusetts that just
happened to also be a stretch of the trail (North Row Rd in Sterling).
Some of the arrows have already been torn down, for example the turnoff
from Lancaster Rd in Berlin into the woods is easy to miss now... just
staples remain on the telephone pole. Incidentally, it dawned on me
that probably ALL of the offroad sections are trespassing of some form
or another; it's that the official owners of the land (Tenneco,
Boston & Maine RR, etc) just aren't there to do anything. I intend
to follow the whole thing this weekend, and will map out the route on
topos as best as possible. -kb

The trail seems to network together major dirt bike "playgrounds".
One playground is the woods near the proposed Clinton dump. You can
pick it up the trail at near where Chase Hill Rd meets 110. Follow
the orange arrows that start into the woods between the RR tracks and
    110. This goes from Clinton, cuts across a small section of Lancaster,
    and then into Sterling. -kb

NORBA (New england Off Road Bike Association; I think that's right)
has again set up their "turkey-trot" course in central Mass. If you
see a bright orange 3" arrow stapled to a tree, that's it. I have
not seen a map, but two years ago it was 75 miles long and went thru
most towns in the mid-north-central part of Massachusetts. It uses
powerlines, abandoned rail road beds, backwoods trails, and only
rarely has to use real roads to connect between them. Have fun, but
beware: it appears there is little regard to trespassing, and dirt
bikes can leave the scene a lot faster than a mtn bike ;-) kb
