2269.0. "Bicycle Help" by MILKWY::CE_TOOLS () Tue May 05 1992 16:24

    	What's the best road bike out there for a price range of
        $400? Any good bike stores close to the Franklin area?

2269.1Here's a to name a couple...SALEM::SHAWFreedom is skiing solo...!Tue May 05 1992 17:4714

    At the a little more than $400, (500.00) range I can name two.
    However, both bikes that I know are in Southern NH bike shops
    I am sure you could find dealers closer to you, if not send me
    mail if interested.

    1- Bridgestone RB-2. A great bike at around $550. Janpanese Ishiwata
       frame (unheard of at these prices). Shimano EX-400 drivetrain.
       Araya rims.

     2- Univega gran primo (gran something , I forgot). Pretty light
       weight. Shimano EX-500 drivetrain, Araya rims.

    Those suggestions are good, I'm sure, especially the RB-2.

    An alternative is to start with as much top quality as you
    can afford up front, and enhance over time. To wit:

            Pkg. A              - or -            Pkg. B
       ----------------------------------------------------------
       - an EMS fork, - Ergo Power shifters.
       - Titanium stem and seatpost pin,
       - Mavic ceramic rims,

    Either one should be a good start. Over time, you can accumulate
    more bike parts and eventually produce a rideable machine! The
    plus thing is that, meanwhile, you have a handsome collection of
    conversation pieces for your mantle!

2269.3If it;s TREK your looking for .....?NAPIER::BARRETTSponsor me for PAN MASS Ride. DTN 297-9232Tue May 05 1992 17:575
The "TREK STOP" in Grafton Mass carries only Trek bikes, and there are several
Bikes in that price range (and above) in the ROAD, MB, HY-B types. I have found
the owner to be very help full even though I got my Trek at another shop.

2269.4Another questionMILKWY::CE_TOOLSTue May 05 1992 20:205
    Within a $400 price what should I be looking for? Since I am novice, I
    would want to make sure I really get my $400 worth. What are the top
    5 typical question/features that I should ask or look for?

    At Free Motion you can get a Wheeler 4200 with Shimano RX-100
    components for $400. However it is more of racer than a touring bike.

    Depending on what size bike you need, Free Motion had some leftover
    Miyatas with Shimano 105 on Aluminum frames for $325.00, and a 60 cm
    Aluminum frame with cheaper Shimano Index components for $200.00, all
    brand new. There was a new 600GT touring bike 57cm with bar-end
    shifters for $375.00.
