2231.0. "'92 GIRO's Really 60% Cooler?" by POLAR::TANSLEY () Fri Apr 03 1992 21:06

    I'm in need of a new helmet, and 2 that I really like are the GIRO
    Hammerhead and the Hammerhead SC ('92 version). They both fit me
    extremely well (I have a very small head), and I also like the look
    of them because they don't stick out from the sides as much as a
    BELL, for example. Those of you with small heads can understand why
    I don't want something that sticks out like a pumpkin!

    In Canada, Hammerhead can be found for about $80.00 and the new SC
    model costs about $110.00 or so (both in Canadian $$). Does anyone
    out there know if the $30.00 or so difference is worth it in terms
    of all the extra ventilation the SC ("Super Cool") supposedly
    provides? Is it really 60% cooler than last year's, as GIRO claims?

    Regards,

    Doug-whose-head-may-be-small-but-it-sure-can-get-hot-up-there!

    You definitely look 60% cooler wearing a '92.

    Oh, you mean temperature? Well, I haven't overheated yet this year
    so I can't tell yet.

    At those prices, you are getting into the range of the Time helmet,
    which definitely is quite cool and light. And... you get the honor
    of wearing a piece of equipment that shouts TIME in big bold orange
    letters. :-) Honestly, though, the helmet is light and cool, and
    has about the same shape (narrow) as the Giro.

    	Another feature of the Time helmet I like:

    		Time put little arrows at the outlets so that
    		you know which way the air is flowing. At least,
    		John Lee's helmet has the air flow direction
    		marked.

    	What a hoot!

    Drat, That's not the direction of airflow! John's wearing it
    backwards.

    I *knew* something was wrong when the helmet whistled unless
    I looked backwards!  :-)

2231.9INTAKES CAN BE DANGEROUS!WMOIS::GIROUARD_CMon Apr 06 1992 16:095
     I thought those arrows were required through federal regulations so
    that when travelling down the road you'll know to keep those intakes
    away from birds, small children, and compact cars.... :-)

    But is the Time helmet guaranteed for replacement in the event of a
    crash? I was intrigued by Giro's claim and would consider it for this
    reason. Something like the last helmet you'll need to buy?

    I think other manufacturers also offer a replacement helmet
    after crash, but I don't know about Time. Interesting question.

2231.121 year limit on helmet replacementOXNARD::KLEEKen LeeWed Apr 08 1992 19:296
    I think the Giro replacement offer is only good for 1 year from the
    date of purchase. Unless you plan on crashing every year, this
    probably won't be useful.

2231.13Free replacement for '92POLAR::TANSLEYWed Apr 08 1992 21:1412

    re: .12

    The 1 year limit applied to the '91 models. For '92, there is no time
    limit (at least on certain models, including the Hammerhead SC I was
    looking at). As I recall, there was also a charge in '91 ($15.00??),
    while the replacement will now be free of charge.

    Good selling point, but one that I hope never to use!

    Doug.

    There is a $15.00 replacement cost for all Giro Thinshell helmets and
    Prolight Lycra helmets will be replace free of charge. There is no
    time limit on the 92 helmets but I would bet they would only replace
    it once.

2231.15Giro SC helmet linersOXNARD::KLEEKen LeeMon Apr 13 1992 18:117
    By the way, my local shop is selling the new Giro helmet liners as an
    upgrade. Cost is around $20 (I don't remember exactly). They claim
    that most of the "coolness" benefits are from the liner, not changes to
    the helmet design. Anyone have mored info on this?
