2221.0. "Cannondale Hybrid -- H600 worth it?" by AKOCOA::MATUS (PC and Networks Mgr for GIA) Sun Mar 29 1992 19:50

    I have pretty well decided to buy the C'dale hybrid. But, I am not
    sure the H600 is worth $150 more than the H400. The frames are
    identical (except for color). The differences seem to be in the
    components:
    			H400			H600

    Hubs Shimano Exage 500 LX	(same)
    			with feehub
    Crank Shimano Exage 400	Shimano Exage 500 LX
    			30/40/50		30/40/50
    Bottom Bracket	Shimano Exage 500LX	Shimano Deore, sealed mech
    Front Derailleur	Shimano Exage 400LX	Shimano Deore LX
    Rear Derailleur	Shimano Exage 400LX	Shimano Deore LX
    Hanlebars		High strength steel	Alumninum
    Brakeset XCM forged alloy	Dia-Compe 986 cant

    My riding will be 100% paved road. But, I live in very hilly terrain
    and shift quite a lot. (I am always looking for that little more
    umph!)

    Now, the C'dale H400 is a stretch of the budget (by a lot). Is it
    really worth another $150?

2221.2How much $?WEORG::WIEGLERMon Mar 30 1992 13:401
    What are the actual prices for the 2 bikes?
2221.3Go cheap, upgrade if something breaks later39675::MJOHNSONMatt JohnsonMon Mar 30 1992 13:476
    For all-road riding, I doubt if the price difference is worth it. I
    wasn't particularly impressed with the Deore LX components'
    performance, anyway -- DX works much better, but it is even more
    expensive.

Is this Cannondale the one with the funny geometry? I saw a review of a
Cannondale hybrid recently which said that the bike was quite unusual. The
top tube was very short, the stem high, and there was a large amount of fork
trail. This all led to a very upright position with the front wheel flopping
about at low speeds. They concluded that the bike was good for posing on a
beachfront, but no good for long rides.

2221.5road bike with a triple?OXNARD::KLEEKen LeeMon Mar 30 1992 18:178
    If you're riding only on paved roads, you might be better off with a
    regular road bike. Some have triple cranks to help you with the hills.
    All are faster than hybrids, due to lighter wheels and skinnier tires.
    Trek and Specialized (among others) sell good quality road bikes
    with triple cranks.

    re: .2

    The H400 is on sale for $515. The H600 is on sale for $650.

    re: .4

    I'd be very interested in reading the review. Do you remember where
    you saw it? I believe that the hybrid is basically thier road frame.
    I can post the geometry tonight (when I am at home with the catalog.)

    I rode it over the weekend and found it very light and steady. I felt
    good about the on hills performance. Also, it felt very comfortable to
    me. After test riding it, I tried a Miyata hybrid which felt faster
    but much less comfortable.

    re: -.1

    I did think about road bikes, but like the heads up position. I often
    ride with my kids. (My 11 year old is up to 15 miles.) And, I pay
    particular attention to traffic.

    Thanks

    You may wish to call Country Bike and Ski in Barre. Sam Salvadore, the
    owner had some 91's, I think you could get the 400 in the mid $400
    range.

    Not sure of his phone numbe.

    	Head Tube Angle (degrees)	68	70	70
    	Top Tube Length (in)		20.11	21.60	21.93

    	Ground to Top of Top Tube (in)	28.60	30.84	31.25

    I will be using the 18 inch version.

    Thanks for the advice.

2221.9Save the money, I guessAKOCOA::MATUSPC Manager for GIAWed Apr 08 1992 18:227
    Well, I guess the advice is that the Deore LX is NOT worth the extra
    money. So, I'll get the H400.

    Thanks for the input. (If you have any other thoughts, please let me
    know.)

    Just to let you know, I bought the H400 today AND LOVE IT! I also
    upgraded to GripShift. Well worth it.
