2182.0. "Hell Week '92" by SHALOT::ELLIS (John Lee Ellis - assembly required) Tue Feb 04 1992 22:51

I got the following from Nick Gerlich, organizer of HOT'92 (the
Heart of Texas 1992 cycling event) and TNT (the Tour of North Texas,
    a RAAM Qualifier):

                                   (Go To)
                                Hell Week '92

                             Live Irresponsibly:
Bike a Lot, Eat a Lot,
And Don't Feel Guilty About It.

    When: March 14 - 22

    Where: San Marcos, Texas

    Lodging: Executive House Hotel
             512-353-7770
(tell desk clerk you are with Nick Gerlich's Hell Week party)
one bed, 1-2 persons: $29.95 per night
two beds, 1-2 persons: $34.95 per night

Format: Routes on March 14-21 will be 100-120 miles in length (usually)
with short-cut options. One day during the week will be a road trip to
Bandera (west of San Antonio), where we will park, and then ride west
into Texas Hill Country to do a 110-mile circuit used on the infamous
Leakey Death Ride. The Sunday March 22 ride will be only 30-40 miles
before we disband. Feel free to join us for any or all of the week.

Fees: None. Pay nothing, get nothing. Let's just ride and have a good
time. If enough people are interested, I have a t-shirt design we
could have printed to commemorate the occasion. I would need a dozen
shirt commitments, though, to keep the cost from being too high.
Please let me know if you are interested in a shirt.

Other Stuff: Please let me know if you plan to come. If you want to
come, and would like info on roommate possibilities (to share costs),
call me. As soon as I know you plan to come, I will send you details
on how to find the hotel (it's very simple).

By the way the hotel is very nice, with cable tv and pool. There
are lots of good feed zones in town for us to patronize, and the outlet
mall offers some shopping diversions (bring your plastic).

       I hope you can come!

A few remarks... I don't know Nick personally, but he is a long-time
ultramarathon cyclist, and clearly committed to cycling, as he is
putting on a RAAM Qualifier and other rides. He is also a professor
    by trade.

Hell Week '92 strikes me as a great attitude for biking - just get
out there and bike with other people who love it. If you are tired
of winter (you all up North), March is a mild month in Texas, and
should offer good springtime cycling. Also, the Hill Country is both
    beautiful and challenging.

Fred Mudgett, did I hear you reaching for a pencil? :-)

I have met Nick a few times. Once on an event in Ohio. It had some
kind of pretentious name like "The Toughest 24 Hours in Cycling." Nick
and Becky were doing it for fun, as were Linda and I.

Rides can be poseurs too, I guess.

Now where did I put that pencil,

You know my heart too well John. I'm probably not going to
do the Hotter than Hell Hundred this year because it was
such a long drive (1300 miles) for a single day of riding,
but for a week! Ohhhh thats tempting, esspecially when the
alternative is sitting home weekends listening to the heat
pump drone away.
