2117.0. "foot pain from climbing?" by CSCOA1::HOOD_R () Wed Nov 06 1991 18:40

Is this file slow today or what? I guess it's time to ask
a question about foot pain.... mine in particular. When I started
riding a road bike in August, I discovered a bicycle foot pain that
I never had before. If you feel down the outside of your foot,
there is a bony protrusion about 2/3 of the way from the toe to the
    heel.... see illustration:

                 ( )
                  ---

Okay, okay, so I'm no computer artist. Anyway, this protrusion is on
everybody's feet, but it swells a little and aches on my right foot
during and after rides. It seems to be related to the fact the I do
a lot more out-if-the-saddle climbs during road rides. I thought
that it might be my shoes, but switching shoes did not help. Any
ideas on what might cause this, or what I can do about it?

What kind of shoes... are they cycling (cleated/clips) shoes?

     Might they need an adjustment?

Sounds to me like it might be your pedaling style.

It is very possible that when you stand up and rock the bike you
may be shifting all the force that you are applying to the outside of
your foot. Next time you get out of the saddle on a hill consciously
check how your feet are inside the shoe. If you notice that you tend
to pedal on the outside of your feet than that could be the problem.

Hope this made a little sense.

re: .1 I don't think that it is the shoe. I originally thought that
the problem was tennis-shoes in toe clips, but the problem persisted
after I went to Shimano 105 pedals and Look shoes. The stiffer sole
didn't help. I set the shoes up with the red arc cleats, being careful
to adjust the range of motion so that it doesn't hurt my knees. I
positioned the ball of my foot over the center ("axle") of the pedal.
It could still be the foreward/rearward postion of the cleat.

re: .2 That is a possibility. I kind of thought that I was doing as
you said, or perhaps unconsciously trying to "stand/pedal" on the ball
of my foot.... kind of like a baby learning to walk. The ache has
definitely lessened over the last 500 miles, and I usually don't feel
it the day after a ride... so it could that my foot was weak and
    is now getting stronger.

I was hoping that someone else had experienced this !

Internal bruises can take a while to go away. So if you're reporting
gradual improvement, it may be for this reason (a positive sign).

I was getting a sore left foot on long rides earlier this season, and changed
shoes. When I got the new shoes I found my previous cleat position was too
far forward. Anyway, with better shoes and cleat positioning it's not a
significant problem now.

2117.6Could it be?PROXY::SADINOn the road againTue Nov 12 1991 13:1910
I'm not a cyclist but I do run and have had soem experience with feet problems.
I don't know if this is related but there is a condition known as plantar
fasciitis which is a common overuse problem with runners and maybe it could be
related to cycling as well. The plantar fasciia runs from the heel to the
toes and is like a tendon. If this is overstressed it can become inflamed
and cause soreness. The symptoms feel like a bruise inthe heel that is at its
worse when you first get up inthe morning or after sitting for a long spell and
feels better after using it.

2117.7THIS EXACT PROBLEM IS NOW HISTORY FOR MEAKOCOA::FULLERTue Nov 12 1991 16:589
I had exactly the same problem. It is when I had toe clips and cleats.
I solved the problem at that time, somewhat, by orthotics. Dr.
Jonathan Scarlet in Worcester did them. Excellent podiatrist.

Now that I am using the Time system, both shoes and pedals, the problem
has eliminated itself completely. Not sure if it is the boat anchor...
I mean shoe, or the pedals.

BTW , the foot pain that I described in the base note went away over
the winter (much less use?) and has not returned. Looks like rest
was all that was really needed.

In the early spring, a sore tendon on the back/inside of my right knee
and a sore left foot (arch) appeared as I increased the intensity and
duration of my road rides. Years of running experience told me to
replace 1.5 year old cycling shoes. That indeed solved the problem
with gradual improvement felt each day.

There are also some excellent inserts on the market.
