2101.0. "Conference Notice Contest" by SHALOT::ELLIS (John Lee Ellis - assembly required) Thu Oct 03 1991 22:33

I know this will make me sound like a guy with too much time on his
    hands but...

...friendly as the new Conference notice "Recreational Bicycling" sounds,
it took me a little aback. There's got to be something in between
CYCLE_RACING and "Recreational Bicycling" for the misguided souls who
do PBP, BMB, RAAM, or the HHH (or, hey, Mont Vernon via NH Rte. 13!).

The concept "recreational" hardly seems to apply ... madness is
more like it. I think we'll all agree, a big attraction of this
conference is some of its trans-Jovian (beyond the orbit of Jupiter)
    participants... :-)

I agree with John. I do not consider myself a recreational cyclist,
but I'm not really up to speed to sit in with some of big boys either.

I'm not sure what that means (are we enigmas?). Anyway, I do take it
seriously, I am competitive, but do it because I love it...

Maybe something like the "Not Quite Terminal Cycling" NOTE :-)

Well it's better than the last one:
"temporarily available from 5:00PM to 8:00AM" or something like that.

Since this caters to a wide range of riders, no need to make it any
less general than the title and scope of the notesfile itself. Just
drop the "recreational", and make it "Welcome to the Bicycles
    notesfile".

Greetings,

How about a title that reflects the basic toughness and machismo
that us cyclists exhibit.

	"HOME OF THE CYCLING HOMBRE'S"

Maybe some of you can come up with a more gender neutral term
but you get the idea. What I'd really really really want to
say is "Welcome to the Bicycle Conference if you want to buy
or sell some old iron no problem but generally this is where
people like you ride a bike 100+ miles in a day for a challange
and when we really get crazy we take on significant portions or
the United States or other countries. Remember to sign in at
note 5."

Is that a too much?

Sounds good to me. Let the proletariat decide. This is socialism at
    it's best.

My nomination for the grand final is :-

    "Cycling for fun"

It's simple and we all do that, don't we? Don't we? I was going to
suggest "Old cyclists never die they just get a spoke in the wheel",
    but it'd never fit.

By the way what's the prize given to the chosen suggestion? Chip's
    bike? :*)

    Chip's yearly cast-offs, you know, last year's model C-record
    groupset, that sort of thing.

That's my interpretation as well, Graham. There may also be some
Official Recreational Notes File Guidelines ... who can say?
Or maybe the conference notice will be rotated, as a couple of people
    have suggested.

But ... and this is the most important part ... Ed naturally gets
to keep Chip's cast-offs no matter what, as soon as Chip decides

BTW, this may work out pretty well for Ed. Once Chip takes a spin on
one of Norm's Flye-Matics or Flye-Wheels or other model, he may decide
