2085.0. "Getting across Greater Boston?" by WUMBCK::FOX () Fri Sep 20 1991 18:16

You know, we could use an official "how to get from here to there"
    note. For now however...
What is the best way (if there is a way) to get through Boston on
bike? I'm starting in Manchester NH and want to get to Brockton
MA. Either side of Boston (or 128) is relatively familiar, but
going though it is something I never tried, nor considered until now.
I'll rather not have to go far outside 128, as the miles will grow
beyond what I'd like to do. Something like Rt 38 into Medford looks
doable, but from there to say, Milton is a big question mark.
    My prioritized concerns
    are:

o Safety (I drove rt 28, forget that)
    o Road quality (ditto)
o space for a bike (no (or little) 2 lane, no shoulder, high traffic roads)
o "directness" (staying in a somewhat southerly direction)
o total distance (relates to above)

    Thanks!
    John

If I remember where Brockton is: 3A South to 4 to 27?

    Ed,
Yes, that would do it, as 27 takes you right into Brockton. However,
it is a bit further out than I'd like to go. If it's not feasible to
go through though, that's might be the next best solution.

The "Massachusetts Bicycle Map" (out of print), show several
possibilities, but they're all more "backroad"-ish than Rt38.
One (from Dracut) comes down Fisk St, then Livingston into Tewksbury,
South, Lake, Shawsheen, Boswell, Chestnut thru Wilmington, Winter,
DEan, West, Elm, Alfred, Forest Park, Mishawum, Eaton, Wymnan...
oh, you get the idea. Basically it looks like you want to come right
down thru Medford, finnagle a bit thru Boston, and then shoot out
south on the Boston-Cape Cod Bikeway, which goes right by Brockton.
Another option is once at Medford, take Lexington St. thru Watertown,
then Walnut St thru Newton, and then come back to the Boston-CC bikeway
in Brookline. Come to think of it, the latter is how I'd do it.
If you want, I can photocopy the sections of the map. -kb

And I'm pretty sure that you can get a copy through the BABC.

I have a friend who rode from Roxbury to Tewksbury, MA, mostly on Rt.
38 once outside of Boston. He described it as a pretty good ride.
With that in mind, the route suggested in the previous reply sounds
    good.

Getting to the Cape from Boston is easy. Make your way to Blue Hill Ave
which turns into Rt. 28 which takes you to the Bourne Bridge. Once you
get out of Mattapan it's a nice route. Southeastern Massachusetts is
very flat.

New State Bike Map on the way...

The Massachussetts State bike map will be updated and reprinted,
with availability as soon as this spring.

If you have used the old map, now is the time to comment on it.
    	Send ideas and/or corrections to:

10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116

The map has been out of print for several years due to lack of
funds. The state has decided to privatize the map to get it
published. It looks like the AYH * is going to take on the job
    	of updating, reprinting, and distribution.

Although the map will no longer be free, it will once again be
    	available.

AYH can start by removing the bridge that's on the map, almost directly
across from their AYH in Northfield, that supposedly crosses the
Connecticut River. Was I pissed when I tried to cross that on a
day trip to Vermont a few years ago... -kb

I will grant that the bridge is often obscured by fog. That it does
not exist, no. In fact there are two bridges. One, with some
    difficulty, can be walked across.

The Globe just had an article on these bridges yesterday... what
    timing.

There's one (RT10) in Northfield about 10 miles south of the NH/Vermont
border, and another (double bridges with island) way north (20+ mi)
in Brattleboro. In between, RIGHT across from the AYH, is the
one that I'm referring to... it has huge iron panels across the
entrance and it is impossible to get a bike over/thru/across.
Nicely marked on the Mass Bike Map, though. -kb
2085.11update on Massachusetts Bike MapLOWELL::GUGELlife is not a spectator sportTue Mar 31 1992 14:2723

Hi, I just checked into BIKE notes again after my usual winter
absence :-). However, AYH will not be doing the Massachusetts
    Bike Map.

Andy Rubel (current president of BABC) is doing it, *not* as
a BABC project, but independently. However, BABC *will* be a
distributor of the map. And it won't be free any more, as Andy
is trying to make a living off of this. I believe he plans to
split the map into two - Eastern and Western Mass, concentrating
first on getting the Eastern Mass. portion out. He plans to make
it a better map in that it will be something that you can actually
*use* on the road (anyone who has the original must know by now
you can't use it as a "real" map). I think I remember him saying
it would be ready this May, however I really doubted that at the
time he told me. We'll see. And he'll continue to have the AYH
hostels marked on the maps. Also, he plans to go on to do maps
for the other New England states as well if the Mass. maps are
    successful.

All this info is as of mid-January. Haven't heard anything
    more since then.
