2068.0. "Advice needed!" by BINKLY::SINGH () Thu Sep 05 1991 13:45

I am thinking of buying an entry level mountain/city bike in the $350-$400
price range.

I have been to a couple of stores and the once that appear to be decent (I don't
know much about bikes, but these are what the salesmen said were good!) are the
following:

BRIDGESTONE    MB-6

DIAMOND BACK   TOPANGA

TREK           830

Any comments/advice?

Thanks!

    Just for comparison purposes, you might also want to check out the
    Schwinn CrossCut. I've got a friend who's got one and loves it. I've
    got a lower-model Schwinn (Mirada) and am contemplating trading up next
    season. The CrossCut is in the price range you mentioned.

    It sounds like you are looking for a cross-bike.

    I would consider looking at the Giant Nutra or Innova. Giant
    manufactures these bike for Schwinn and Specialized. The bikes are the
    same, but the list price is about $50 less.

    Bianchi also makes a nice cross bike.
2068.3A vote for Diamond Back...MYBALL::MOYLANGravity, it's the LAWFri Sep 06 1991 14:198
	I was just in the same situation you are now. I ended up getting a
Diamond Back Override and I LOVE it. I haven't seen the other DB you refered to
but I did see the other bikes and I like the DB Override more. I also looked at
the Crosscut and thought it was a little too pricy, I got my Override for about
$300. So far I have just used it on the street and it rides really smooth.

2068.4buy the TREK!COMET::VOITLSat Sep 07 1991 04:486
    I have a Trek 830 and I love it. I use to ride back and forth to
    school, I also beat the heck out of it on single tracks. I have
    been racing rode bikes for a couple of years and heard that mountain
    biking was good for bettering handling skills. So this past april I
    bought an inexpensive mb to play with. The 830 is pretty heavy(30.5
    lbs) but it is a great bike for the $$.

    	Hmmmm...

    	What's a rode bike?

    	Is that a bike that's already been ridden?
2068.6MTB or HybridEXPRES::HUITue Sep 10 1991 17:3331
    Here is another sales pitch.

    Decide on which type of bike first. Mtb or hybrid.

    The hybrid bike sarts at a little lower price range (~$300) and a real
    Mtb starts at about $350.

    Since you have decided on a $350-400 budget. You can can either of the
    above.

    The basic questions I would ask are:
    1. What type of riding are you going to do? (50% road/50% trails,
    etc..)
    2. What type of trails? (Hard Pack Dirt Road or state park, wooded
    trails, etc..)
    3. Aggressive? (Planning to race in the future, Jump rocks, etc...

    If you are planing to ride mostly trails and are on the aggressive
    side, Go with the MTB. If you are mostly road and hard pack dirt
    roads - hybrid.

    As for the 3 bikes you have choosen, I know more about the MB 6 then the
    other two. But those are all pretty comparable bikes. It really depends
    on which one feel the best to you and which bike has the most of what
    you want for the least amount of money.

    Good Luck,
