2065.5Cannondale?KAHALA::PRESTONWed Sep 11 1991 14:4610
    I've been out of active biking for a few years, but am now getting back
    into it. One thing I've noticed is that Cannondale products don't seem
    to be around any more - at least not where I've looked.

    Are they gone?

    Thanks,

2065.7The Third HandBROKE::NALESue Nale MildrumMon Mar 02 1992 16:1614
    A friend lent me a *really* great catalog for bike tools. Each tool
    is described in pretty good detail, with drawing, and often similiar
    tools are compared as to their durability, fit, etc. Prices for most
    tools tend to be less than in Nashbar, Performance, Co. Cyclist. In
    addition, lots of tips and hints are scattered throughout:

    The people at the Third Hand are very helpful. They all know what
    they're doing,

    They also practice what they preach about environmentalism. While
    Nashbar keeps talking about it while sending me a new,
    non-recyclable catalog every month, The Third Hand has cut down to
    two catalogs a year, and both on recyleable paper.

2065.9Womyn's WheelBROKE::NALESue Nale MildrumWed Apr 29 1992 14:3915
    I just got another great catalog: Womyn's Wheel. It's a catalog of
    women's cycling products. They have lots of stuff designed
    specifically for women: shorts, tights, jerseys, sport bras, shoes,
    helmets, saddles, sunglasses, etc. There's even a cycling outfit for
    pregnant women! (not that I have a need for THAT!) Included in the
    catalog is info on various women's cycling groups and rides.

	Hampton, NH 03842-3629
	(603) 926-4939
	FAX: (603) 926-5218

    They also have an outlet at Aries Sports and Bikery, Route 1,
    Newbury, MA 01951 (508) 465-8099.

    My wife just got the cycling outfit for pregnant women yesterday. She
    loves it. Seven months along and still cycling! It does seem alot
    harder to go up hills on the tandem.

2065.11Looking for "cheap" Mail Order??NEMAIL::PAVLOCKTue Nov 29 1994 00:3921

    My son purchased a new Cannondale Mtn. Bike recently from a local
    (Acton, Mass) is is driving me crazy with list of accessories he'd like
    for Christmas.

    I looked through this notes conference and called for a couple of
    catalogs (Colorado Cyclist and Nashbar) that seemed to be referenced
    more frequently.

    We got both catalogs and their prices are similiar to the local shop.
    Some items are a little less, but many are the same price with a few
    higher.

    Is that normal? I was expecting more savings from Mail Order places.
    Or did I just pick the wrong two catalogs?

    Are there some less expensive mail order houses?

    Regards,
    Denny

2065.12WMOIS::GIROUARD_CTue Nov 29 1994 08:5318
    It's normally not normal with higher end stuff. You must have a pretty
    decent local shop.

    On lower priced stuff you'll find that the shipping charges will wash
    any savings (unless you're buying a truckload).

    One advantage to the catalogs (mostt attractive for me) is that the
    selections are generally much broader than a dealer and you can lay
    your hands on the stuff quickly.

    Other than that, you're doing the right thing checking this stuff out.
    But, if you're gonna get into something pricey, consult the mail order
    houses first. And even then, talk to the local to see if he can cut
    a break for you (telling him the mail order price of course). They
    always appreciate a first shot and are likely to be more flexible
    with you upon your return.

2065.13:-)NOVA::FISHERTay-unned, rey-usted, rey-adyTue Nov 29 1994 09:4414
    The catalogs generally carry stuff that's selling in high volume and,
    as Chip says, the savings are often cancelled out by the shipping
    charges. Some of the catalogs carry better deals than others or
    a better line of stuff. Having spent more bucks than I care to admit
    through several catalogs and bike shops, I'd rather buy through a shop
    that's likely to want to fix something that he sold me. However, I'd
    still take the "fix it yourself" gamble through the cats. My #1 rule
    is "no wheels from Nashbar" :-)

    ------------------------------
    You know your habit has gotten out of hand when 5 bike shop owners
    know your first name and 3 catalogs know your credit card numbers and
    mailing address.  :-)
2065.14SMURF::LARRYTue Nov 29 1994 12:1616
I think bike shops are becoming more competitive with catalogues and thats
great. Catalogues do vary in overall quality. I dont think Nashbar
labled products are as good as Performance for example. Nashbar has more
lower to middle end stuff but they are starting to carry more exotic stuff
these days. BTW, Nashbar now carries Wheelsmith wheels so the quality
should be way up there.
Personally my favorites are Performance and Colorado.
Colorado has the edge on quality but tends to carry mid-high end stuff
whereas Performance is more in the middle.

In any case where catalogues really win is convenience.
Also keep an eye on the closeouts. Lots of times they practically
give away last years models cleats, helmets, gloves ....

Happy shopping!

    Did anyone else receive the Goodale's Catalog in the mail recently.
    They covered a lot of items and had 2 15%-discount coupons. One that's
    good for the month of May and a second that is for June.

Not yet... But I'll use your 15% coupons if you're not going to. I need some
new shorts.
