2056.0. "SHR routes ?" by HERBIE::REED () Wed Aug 28 1991 17:51

Well it looks like fall is coming despite my protest. With the later
dawn and the earlier dusk and being sure the kid catches the school bus
it's becoming harder to get my cycling in at those times of day.
I'm considering taking a lunch time ride from SHR instead. I've
seen a few riders around here and expect there are some reasonable
routes. If any one could help me I'd certainly appreciate it. I hope
to find routes that'll be 12-20 miles that do not pose a significant
threat to my life. In other words I consider Rt 9 to be very
    hazardous.
Anybody have any suggestions ? Anyone interested in joining me ?
I'm not a LeMond , usually averaging around 18-19 mph. I hate to quit
now as the weather is still decent, but daylight shortening.

    					Thanks..
    					 Ken

ken, I live in Shrewsbury, and used to enjoy the ride down South
Street. Go down and cross RT 20 and ride that way. the street may
be a bit bumpy but at least you won't have much traffic to contend
    with.

Down the end of that road, towards the Tufts Vet school theres a gated
dirt road on the right, with no trespassing signs... if you dare, take
a walk up there, it's pretty cool. theres an old stone water tower
that's cool.. and theres alot of numbered grave sites up there, I guess
from around the turn of the century when this was a state pen...

    Longer route ...

South street across 9 to Main St. turn right ->

go past Ward Hill ski area to Crawford St. turn left ->

go to end of Crawford, turn left onto Church St->

go under 290 and continue on Church St to Cross St. turn left->

go to end of Cross St., thru fork in road to end
take a right, then quick left onto 140 ->

140 back through Shrewsbury to Rt. 20, then back to SHR

Haven't clocked it, but it's probably 16-18 miles.
