1979.0. "MOUNTAIN BIKE PURCHASE" by GVA02::CARLSON () Thu Jun 27 1991 08:20

    I am in the market for a reasonalby high quality mountain bike - and
    locally have a selection of Raleigh (CHILL), Schwinn and Wheeler
    (7700 or 8000) bikes. They are all 21 gear, with either DX or XT
    shimano equipment, and chrome or aluminum frames. They're priced
    about the same (around 1100 $) - this is in Switz.. I'm not at all an
    expert on bike equipment - but am willing to pay a little more for
    performance versus just an average bike. The bike will be used for
    pleasure/amateur riding, couple days/week - with quite a bit of
    uphill riding.

    Are there any key questions I need to ask - or other comparisons I should
    be making ? And are these 3 companies pretty reliable - or is there
    another outstanding make on the market I should be considering ?

    Thanks for any ideas.

1979.1Take 'em out for a ride before you buy!SALEM::SHAWVertical ObsessionThu Jun 27 1991 11:2326

    I have never heard of wheeler, are those three your only choices?
    I know in the states you could pickup a pretty descent mountain bike
    for around $1100.00. Do they have TREKs there? the 8000 (aluminum
    frame) is a real descent bike. Basically if the bike fits good, you
    like the ride and it doesn't weight over 27 lbs. the only other factors
    are frame and component quality. If you are getting the complete DX or
    XT groupo your can't realy go wrong. Do they let you take the bikes out
    and try them. The freewheel demensions are same on DX and XT and should
    provide you good climbing. I think I saw in bicycle magazine here that
    Marin bicycles has a rep. in Switzerland, I think it is in Zurich.
    Do they have Fat Chance, or Merlin over there. If it were me, I would
    put Schwinn at the end of my list.
    You can also pickup descent bikes with XT or DX group and Rock Shox
    through mail order for around $1200 to $1500.
    If you get an opportunity to test ride them, try to spend more than
    just a few minutes on the bike. See if you 're still comfortable on
    it after 20 minutes of riding. Reason being, with the straight bar
    you cannot realy change you position that much, so it has to fit you
    well to begin with.

    Good luck,
