1973.0. "Deore LX,DX and XT Hubset differences?" by TEMPE::HUFFAKER () Tue Jun 18 1991 15:35

Does anyone know the difference between the Deore LX,DX and XT Cassette
Hubsets (ie. bearings and race quality, seals, materials and finishes)?

    Thanks

    Hi Mike,

I have the DX on my bike and love it. I ride atleast six days a week
and three or four days of that is rough terrain riding and trying jumps
and going over logs and rocks etc.. Unlike my previouse bike that I had
to keep fine tunning the derailures, with the DX I have not had to
touch it yet. I am not quite sure about the material finish but there
is noticable differences in the shifters and smoothness.
The basic reason I went with the DX was the freewheel dimensions.

	Shaw...

What make/model do you have with the Deore DX
	Groupe?

My wife and I are in the process of buying a
Diamondback Apex with the Deore DX Groupe.

We are changing the pedals and adding a grab/
layout bar, but that is about it.

Mountain Biking Mag had a fairly good review
of the bike, their only complaint was that the
rear brake sets needed to be adjusted very
	carefully.

FWIW we bought the bikes from Chelmsford
	Cyclery.

1973.3I have the IBOC-PROSALEM::SHAWVertical Obsession...Wed Jun 19 1991 13:3119

    Hi Dick,

I have the Mongoose IBOC pro with complete Shimano DX group.
I love it. The 91 models are lighter than the 90s. Mine weights
    26. lbs. at 17" frame. The Appex is a real comfortable bike too.
BTW, you are not that far away from Buchika's in Salem, on route 28
They have a good selection of bikes there. C-dales, Specialized
Bridgston (which makes some real good MTBs) and some others.
I have noticed they have some special frames too.
A couple of our DECy freinds work there so you might get pampered
service. My Mongoose I bought in Derry NH. and I found that (comparing
with my frieds bikes) Mongoose is a much racier bike with real good
components at a lower price. Similar bikes with same componentry and
weight as mine cost a couple of hunderd dollars more.
Also check out the new (91) GIANT ATX 780 and 760 ( XT and DX )
components respectively, they also offer more for your money.

We looked at the IBOC at Pedal Power and Ski,
but I really disliked the owner, so even thou
	I liked the bike....

I looked at the Specialized at Goodales in
	Nashua...nice bike...

For some reason, we never got to Buchika's.
Not sure why, `cause I bought my first pair of
Volkls there a few years back.

We definately want the DX componentry and the
rapid-fire style of shifters. The Specialized
with full DX components has the "normal" above
bar shifters...I have not looked at the C-dales.

Dick although I have gotten used to my STI shifters (I had to, just
didn't want to go through the additional hassles). But if you have
/find an opportunity to get a bike with above bar shifters, definately
get those. They are much quicker and less complicated to adjust.
All the bridgstone bikes come with above bar shifters as well.
In general, if the componentry is same, and the weight is not too much
I won't ride anything which weight over 30 lbs. The only factor is feel
and fit. You will know it. Ride a few so you can campare. But if it
feels right then its the bike for you. Remember the keyword is DEMO!!

For MTB hubsets, I doubt that you'll see much of a difference
from low-end to high-end. They'll all be strong, they'll all
roll adequately, and they'll all accept Shimano's hyperglide cogs.
You can even change the ratios by exchanging individual cogs.

My opinion about longevity is just speculation, but I really
doubt that you'll run into many people who've experienced the
    differences to tell.

I have a C-Dale touring bike, ST600, with the Deore LX components. It
shifts great, runs smoothly and has required no adjustment once I fixed
what the bike shop messed up. I'm using the Shimano bar-end shifters
with it and they are very precise. I'll admit I don't get them dirty
and abuse them they way a mountain biker would but I agree with the
previous note in that I don't think there is a measurable difference
    between the three.
