1946.0. "Cycling shoes" by GALVIA::STEPHENS (Green Eggs and Ham) Sun May 19 1991 16:06

I have a question regarding cycling footwear.

At the moment I train about 100-150 miles per week, and wear
an old pair of tennis shoes which I've always found give me good support. These
are however now ready for the bin, and I'd like to get a pair of proper
cycling shoes.

I'm also planning a 3-4 week touring trip, and understand that a pair of soft
touring shoes are preferrable to hard shoes. But I was wondering how suitable
these soft shoes are for tough "out of the saddle" training?

Can anyone advise?

Thanks,
Patrick

Personally, Patrick, I commend you for doing that many miles on
any kind of bicycle with tennis shoes!

I'm not very familiar with the technical stuff connected to touring,
but my guess would be you'd still like something with a stiff sole.
Sneaker-looking cycling shoes are sold by a number of companies. The
only difference being that the soles are stiff.

     Are you using clips?

I use AVENIR touring shoes with toeclips. As Chip mentioned,
they're much like running shoes but the sole is fairly stiff.

I have no trouble walking in them and I have no trouble
    	climbing out of the saddle.

I used to wear a pair of running shoes. After the change, I
noticed my feet didn't feel the pedals on the sole of the
foot and my feet were more comfortable.

NASHBAR and PERFORMANCE catalogs contain the kinda shoes you
    	are looking for.

Yes, you should be more comfortable and more pleased even
on long tours (esp. on long tours) with a stiff sole. I
wear cleats while on tour, except when in a town with a
lot of sightseeing/walking. So check out the touring
    cycling shoes.

I wear a pairt of Nike touring shoes. They're essentially a
running shoe with a stiff sole. I've worn these on two-week bicycle
trips averaging 50-60 miles a day. They were great!

    My 2 cents!

Yes, so I would presumably need a shoe that is somewhat hard at the front.

Unfortunately I'm in Ireland and need them very soon, so this isn't really
an option.

Thanks for the advice. I will look out for the brand names mentioned.
