    Consumer Reports  latest issue does hybrid bikes if anyone has seen it
    what do they think of the ratings?

    They do  all  sorts  of  tests, only some of which make any sense.
    Read  what  they  have  to say, and then go to a dealer you trust,
    test ride some bikes, and make up your mind.

One of the major Problem with Consumer Report on Bike test is that they are
testing 91/92 model bikes and when the report comes out it is in Nov or Dec of
1992. The new 1993 bike lines come out in September 1992a so a 1992 Specialize
Crossroad is probably completely different from a 1993 so components changes
almost even year these days. 

Go ride them and decide for yourselve. A bike is not like a car.
