1745.0. "a Campy story" by SHALOT::ELLIS (John Lee Ellis - assembly required) Mon Sep 24 1990 12:06

It was showery Saturday down here, and it cost me an extra $75.
Here's how: with rain outside, I repacked the bottom-bracket
instead of riding, putting in a new C-Record spindle and matching
bearings. (The old one had gotten pitted on one side. Can't
understand how, really. I think I lean more in one direction,.)

Fully tightened down (to the point where turning was stiff),
the spindle was still loose. What? Down to the bike shop, where
the owner asked me, "You sure you tightened it down all the way?
You sure the fixed cup is tight?"

After minutes of fiddling around, he brought out new C-Record cups,
which to the naked eye looked the same as the 1986 ones the bike
came with ... but, no, the new ones fit the new spindle like a glove,
except that the WHOLESALE price for those things was $39.90 and $49.90,
respectively (the latter for the fixed cup, I think). Hey, the tightening
ring alone is $6.00. Well, even he was flabbergasted, charged me the
cheapest wholesale price he could find, plus nothing for the labor.
(He had refaced the BB, and reamed out the threads, etc., because
    business was slow that morning.)

Do I now have the consolation that I'm again a riding top-of-the-line
fully functional Campy BB? Hmmm... Well...

RE your bb axle was only pitted on one side: if it was on the left
it was because of the spray from cars passing you in the rain; if it
was on the right it was from excess amount of dog saliva which gets
sprayed at you from that side.

I'd suggest you determine which hand you use to
grab your water bottle. If it's the same side as
the pitting then you might assume that the spillage
from the bottle (caustic Gatorade or exceed no doubt)
is probably the culprit, or my name is not Smith :)

    Dear Mr. Smith:

Yes! You are right! The water-bottle hand (R) is the same
as the pitted spindle-end (R). Of course I don't know if it
was the Gatorade (Citrus Cooler flavor) or the Dr. Pepper.

Maybe I should get a Camelback to protect my BB investment...
of course, then it would be headset that would get pitted. :-)
