1741.0. "Post-crash Rx" by SWAM3::ANDRIES_LA (and so it goes ...) Tue Sep 18 1990 21:57

    Two weeks ago I was cut off on a concrete bike trail as I was
    travelling 24mph (so says my Cateye which still works somehow). I
    tumbled and slid on my back and shoulder for a good 15-20 feet.
    Cutting to the chase; I'm just about back to nornal except for an ugly
    discolored scar about the shape (and size) of the Soviet Union. I've
    heard rumors regarding the effectivness of vitamin E and cocca butter
    in in the healing process. Any truth to this? Are there any other
    suggestions to prevent me from forever looking like a patchwork quilt?
    All wisdom is appreciated.

    Vitamin E is recommended, yes. An additional hint: I've heard
    that strong sunlight can discolor road-rash skin, if left unprotected,
    so sunscreen is advised when you are riding outside 'til it heals.

    Meanwhile, I'm sure the racers and other real bikers will have more
    advice... glad you're all right.

1741.2keep out of the sunISLNDS::HERTELWed Sep 19 1990 13:077
    I was in an accident last November and I have some scarring on my
    face. The doctor told me to keep the scars out of the sun for one
    full year. A tan will not fade from scar tissue at the same rate
    that it will fade from surrounding skin. This causes the scar to
    be more visible for several years.

    It's been almost a year now, and the scars are barely noticeable.
1741.3Try New-Skin or Saran WrapGSFSWS::JSMITHChromed CannondaleWed Sep 19 1990 13:4412

    	A racing veteran I meet a few months ago in a bike shop
    told me that the best method he has found for healing road
    rash is to cover the entire area with one of those new-skin
    type products and to keep it covered for several days. He
    say's he has even used saran wrap in lieu of the drug store
    stuff and it works. I was going to try this myself after
    my next crash (It'll probably be on the way home now that
    I've written this) but haven't needed to treat myself for
    this yet. If you do try this, let us know if it works well.

1741.4hit it from inside & outside...SUSHI::KMACDONALDIronFish Tamer.Wed Sep 19 1990 17:516
Vit E seems to help with healing scars. Don't know what you planned to
do, but I apply it directly to the skin. Punch a hole in the capsules
and smear the oily gludge inside on the affected area. Usually I eat the
remains, just for luck :-). Seems to work, but I've not ever done an A-B
comparison, and I'm trying like mad to avoid the opportunity! :-)

         Early this summer I crashed on my homeward commute from work
    (100 yards from home, and in front of neighbors, no less) and left a
    fair amount of skin on the pavement. I had four distinct points
    of contact; shoulder, hip, outside of knee and ankle. The hip and
    knee bore the brunt of the contact and sustained the deepest wounds.
    I used Vitamin E and for some reason applied it most liberally and
    regularly to the abbrasion on my knee. I must admit that I was
    amazed at how much more quickly my knee healed up in relation to
    the other abbrasions. Try it, I think you'll be happy with the
    results!

    I used second skin on my butt when I crashed last year, didn't use
    anything on shoulder, arm, thigh, knee, calf, ankle, raced the 604
    miles, and then let the scab/scars form. don't look any worse now
    than I did then, I guess.

    Thanks for the advice! I applied the vitamin E to the area this
    morning and swallowed another pill to cover my bets. I'll pick up
    some New Skin today and use that, too. The last thing I want is for
    obsevers to argue which is worse, my pedaling or my abrasions. I'll
    post another note here in a few weeks as an update. Again, thanks.

1741.8Aloe liquidWORDY::GRACEWait, I'm LIVING in Grace-land!Tue Sep 25 1990 16:147
    All of these suggestions work well. You might also want to try using
    fresh Aloe juice. It's available at most health food stores. This is
    a great natural healer. If you use it in conjunction with Vitamin E,
    you'll heal up like new. I'm surprised no one else suggested. I'll bet
    some of those new skin ointments have it as an ingredient.

1741.9Yes another vote for aloe and Vitamin ESKIDOG::LEWISWed Sep 26 1990 12:2110
    Yes, Aloe and Vitamin E work wonders. I got in a bike accident about a
    year and a half ago. I used aloe and Votamin E on all the raod burns
    except one because it was infected and the stuff really hurt it. Guess
    what, yup the only one to scare was the one that I didn't use the
    stuff. You can't even tell I had stiches. My brothers friend got in a
    horrible motorcycle accident (without a helment) and had the worse road
    burns I've ever seen on his face. He used aloe (fresh) and he doesn't
    have one scar.  Remarkable!
