1738.0. "Feedback wanted on Diamond Back Bike" by TADSKI::STOCKDALE () Tue Sep 11 1990 11:28

I plan on buying my 15 year old a mountain bike. We looked at the
Diamond Back the Sorento model. The cost of the bike is approximately
$300. The sales person who I knew felt that this was a very good
bike for that price and he highly recommended it for my son.
I am looking for comments about this particular model or manufacturer
and price if you feel its excessive. I thought that the price was
reasonable. This is a 21 speed bike.
    All comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jack

I own a Diamond Back Ascent EX that I purchased new in 2/89 for $375.
I have over 2k miles on it and no problems. I recommend DB's.

VERY nice bike. It's more comfortable to ride than my IBOC, as it
    has more "relaxed" geometrey.

The Mt. LX workes flawlessly (sp?)

I recommend the Ascent EX highley.

I don't know about the bike the base note mentions, but since the replies
mention the Ascent EX, I'll throw my two cents in. I just bought one
a couple weeks ago. Although this brand was not my first preferance,
I couldn't pass up the price. I bought a new Ascent EX with
Diore components for $419. It usually lists for $520.

1738.4Topanga - similar to SorentoMOVIES::HOGGAn empty desk, a full wastebinMon Sep 24 1990 08:218
I recently bought a Diamond Back Topanga: looks like the same
frame as the Sorento, but with the Shimano 300-LX gear-set,
and 'Farmer John' tyres. Excellent bike, well-engineered.

300$ does seem a bargain: the Sorento retails in UK for just
    under 300 pounds - that's about 540$ just now :-)

I bought a Diamond Back Apex last week. I like it, it's very rugged
I have to keep telling myself it's a bike not a bulldozer as I crash
    thru the underbrush on bushwhacks.
    	I got a great deal @ Steve's Mass Transit in Marlboro as a 1990
leftover. He added a couple of goodies free and service is top notch.
    	It is Deore DX equipped.

re: .6, .7

I have a Topanga that I bought 2 years ago. It's pretty much an "entry level"
mountain bike. It uses Shimano 300LX componentry w/ the thumb-operated shifters
(I forget what Shimano's "name of the year" was for those). The frame is
CroMo. The bike is fairly heavy, about 30 pounds. It seems durable - the only
damage so far was a broken rear derailluer when I got a branch jammed in my
chain. I ride it mostly (90%) off-road. Not a bad bike, but I'd like something
lighter, maybe w/suspension.
