1699.0. "Need Info" by ENOVAX::NORTON (Win or die trying) Mon Aug 13 1990 07:13

I was wondering if anybody has riden on Martha's Vineyard. I am
taking my wife over there for a weeken. We are only taken are bikes.
I have a race on Saturday. I would like to know a good place to stay
at. A place that don't mind having bikes.

    Thanks
    Mike

Mike.

I spent a week at the Vineyard this summer. My wife and I stayed at a
friend's house so I cant offer you any advice on lodging. However, the
bicycle touring was very nice. I covered the whole island on my moutain
bike over the course of the week. The mountain bike was excellent cuz I
could do dirt when needed and the island is small enough that I didnt feel
the need to put on a lot of miles in a short period of time to get somewhere.

I suggest stopping at one of the local stores as soon as you get to the island
and buy a map. Look at all of the maps for sale, some have more detail than
others. The ones with not much detail show only the major roads but the ones
with the detail show the nice roads for biking (for example Middle Rd in
West Tisbury). There are also plenty of bike routes and a bike path.

Have fun!!

Harry

    We did Martha's Vineyard twice.
First time we stayed at the Youth Hostel. Nice, clean, rignt on
the bike trail, away from highways, VERY inexpensive ($5.00) each
per night and very interesting people. Also, we had to be in by
10:00 PM, we had to sleep in segregated (by sex) dorms, and had
to do some chores in the morning.
The second time we went, we stayed at a bed-and-breakfast. We called
the Chamber of Commerce 508-693-0085, got a list of them, picked
one in Edgartown, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was about
a 1 hour ride from the ferry....no problem getting there before
dark, they had a small shed to protect our bike, and there was no
curfew. Everything we wanted was within walking distance except
the beaches, and they were an easy ride.
Price was a bit higher than the hostel, I'm afraid, but HEY, I had
just gotten a raise, so I could afford to splurge once.

To avoid the mob scene at the Woods Hole Ferry, try the Island
Queen which leaves from Falmouth. It's a passenger and bike rider
ferry, no cars, and much nicer than the Woods Hole mess. It goes to
    Oaks Bluff. - Chris

Your info is very old. The youth hostel is $9 a night this year.
