1577.0. "How to clean barrel of a floor pump?" by SX4GTO::HOLT (Robert Holt, ISVG West) Wed Jun 06 1990 18:06

I have an ancient Silca floor pump which is in need of cleaning.

I bought it new in 1974 and its never been rebuilt, and there is
    rust, dirt, etc., inside.

What is a safe method of cleaning out the barrel such that water
doesn't get inside and cause more rust while at the same time
    dissolving old grease..?

I use WD40 on my pump. All you have to do is take the pump apart
Usually by unscrewing the top piece and pulling out the plunger.
Spray a decent amount of WD40 down inside the cylinder then stick
a rag down inside by putting on the end of dowel or even a
dis-assembled plunger and move it up and down to clean out the cylinder
repeat this until most or all of the rust is gone. when you assemble
the pump again you can coat the inside of the cylinder with a slightly
heavier weight oil that will help the seal on the inside of the
pump and make it work better and last longer.

    Works for me!
