1553.0. "Need info. on women's (& men's) road race times" by THEBEN::ERICKSON () Mon May 21 1990 16:40

Would someone give me an idea of what pace (time, dist., mph) top
finishers and the average competitor acheive in road races and time
    trials?

I am particularly interested in the *women's* open category, but also
would like to know what the men's open category times and mph are.

I am not interested in racing now, but would like to know if it's a
    remote possibility.

    Thanks.

This is where reality sets in. Your question is so general in nature and there
are so many variables but I'll still try and answer this best I can.

Avg Sr Mens road race, say 60 miles the group will avg 28-30mph. The lead group
will be faster.

Avg Sr Mens time trail say for 25 miles will avg 25 mph. The top riders will
do around 52-53 min.

Avg Sr womens road race , say 40 miles will avg 23mph. The lead group will
be faster.

Avg Sr womens time trail, say for 25 miles will avg 24mph. The top women
do 56-57 min.

The possibility is always there you just need do the required training to get
you there. Having the will power and discipline to do it, only you can answer.

The above data is for New England races with riders from the Mass/RI district.

What would be the required training to reach this level? Do you
need to go out and grind out 200-300 mile weeks consistently?
Or will say 120 - 150 miles/week suffice if they are done
correctly? If yes, what would this involve?

Aren't speeds in road races heavily dependent on the pack speed?

Riding with a pack brings the speed up as each individual doesn't have
to pull the entire distance. That's why the R.R. speeds mentioned are
substantially higher than TT speeds. In short RR's the pack tends to
just go 'pedal to the metal' (under 70-80 miles or so), where in
multi-day events the pack may do some wierd things - I've seen pix in
the TdF where everyone mutually declared it to be 'Tourist Day' and the
pack would average 15-20 mph so that all could rest a bit in the middle
of a grueling portion of the schedule....

Womens road racing and TT training schedule just my opinion.

Assuming that you raced on Sunday.

Monday - active rest day on the bike nice easy pace keeping your
heartrate no higher than 110bpm. That means you ride today and
yes I know its 40F and raining. (30mi)

Tuesday - Time Trail or TT intervals, riding 1-3 mi at your anarobic threshold.
do 3-4 intervals and time yourself. (20 mi)

Wednesday - Long ride, keep you heartrate at 140 bpm (50mi)

Thursday - Sprints or hill intervals to your max heartrate. (20mi)

Friday - Actice rest day, same as monday (30 mi)

Sat and Sun race or clubs training rides. (est. 50 miles)

200 miles a week. If your only doing crits you can cut this back to 150mi and
do more sprints/speedwork.
