1544.0. "Looking for an old 3-speed hub" by ICS::HALL () Tue May 15 1990 23:25

Here's hoping someone can help me...

A friend lent us their bikes to ride while we're here (9 months
in NE); one is a Schwinn Varsity, and one is a Huffy women's
3-speed. Well, as luck would have it, the gearchange mechanism
inside the Huffy's rear hub broke the second day out. I'd like
to give it back in at least as good a condition as we got it.
This is a Sturmey-Archer rear hub with the planetary gears (I
assume), where the little shifting mechanism sticks out to the
right from the center of the hub.

Just the other day, there was one of these bikes for sale in the
Classifieds for $35, but of course, it was sold by the time I saw
the ad.

Are hubs like this still available? I laced my share of
motorcycle wheels; I could probably do one of these. Is there a
bike junkyard somewhere where I could get a complete wheel?

I'd appreciate any help you could give.

Thanks,
Charlie

There's a barn in Pepperell that has tons of junk bikes in
front of it. I'd bet you could find what you want and get it for
    cheap, too.

Take 111 just N of 111-113 traffic circle, before little bridge
take left on Brookline Rd, it's on the rt within 200 yds.

You could always try the dump. THere seem to always be a not of bicycles
there.

If that doesn't work, I took a bicycle maintenance course at Haggetts in
Concord, N.H. One of the attendees had zillions of bicycles (all dump
picked). Fred (at Haggetts) might be able to 1) help you out by having
the part or 2) put you in contact with this man who seems to have his
own bike junk yard.

How did it fail? I thought that they were indestructible.

Does it seem like it's just in neutral (i.e. it spins
both forward and backwards)?

There's a spot in between 2nd and 3rd where it does that and
all that you'll need is an adjustment.

1544.4Well, not ALL of them are indestructible...ICS::HALLWed May 16 1990 17:4615
Jeff,

We're talking broken metal here. I popped the sprocket off the right side and
unscrewed the franistat that the sprocket was glommed to (boy, I love these
technical terms), and there was broken metal everywhere. Since I don't know
what it SHOULD look like, the only thing I can relate it to is a transmission
failure in a motorcycle, where the shifting forks and/or dogs are busted all
over hell.

Actually, the places in Pepperell and NH sound pretty good; I've gotta think
there are a lot of those hubs somewhere in the world.

Everyone, thanks for the help!

    Ed,

Just to let you know, you pointed me in exactly the right direction.
The guy's name is Roger Hicks, he's a nice enough fellow, and when I
bopped by at 7:30 PM on Saturday night, he sold me a nice hub/wheel (he
only had a gazillion of them) for $5. He's got a few used bikes sitting
outside for sale, and he's got a bunch he's fixing up. Don't go looking
for state of the art; there are a lot of old K-Mart specials, but he's
got a lot of old Schwinns, too, and I have the feeling that if you
walked in and asked him to put a bike together from this over here and
that over there, he'd do it, and you'd have a good bike for $30-$50.

    Thanks,
    Charlie
