| I can answer this since I live at about the geometric center of Leominster
and Marlboro, ride to each often, and most importantly have 1:24,000 scale
topo maps of all of eastern Mass as kitchen wallpaper.
First of all, how you go (assuming this is at normal commuting hours) depends
on whether you think Darwin was right. I am also a commuter but don't mind
going a little out my way to have a road all to myself. There are also lots
of permutations, depending on where you live in Leominster and where you work
in Marlboro. Coming out of *south* Leominster, you want to come out on 12S,
old Platte Rd to 62 (which is fairly busy but has a nice shoulder), through
Clinton to West Berlin. From Leominster *center*, try 117E to 70S, down to 5
corners in South Lancaster, Old Common to Old Lancaster, Wataquadock for a
bit, Lancaster Rd to Randall to 62 to West Berlin (optional double top secret
route: 117E to Brockelman, Hilltop, George Hill, thru Atlantic Union college,
Bolton Rd (no the bridge isn't out for bikes!) to 5 corners). From *north*
Leominster you probably want to hop across 2 and do Mechanic/Old Union Highway
(past DEC's Lancaster House) 70S to 117, 70S and down to 5 corners, etc. to
West Berlin.
From West Berlin, I avoid 62 and take Derby, Linden, Lyman, Crosby, Jones, and
then South St. to South Berlin. A faster yet busier way is 62 thru Berlin
center and then South St to South Berlin. From the South Berlin rotary depends
on where you work in Marlboro. I'll assume you work at greater MR... stay
on Bridge St south out of the rotary, cross 290, left on Hudson, right on
Boundary, cross 20 to Hayes Memorial, then Forest.
It's about 22 miles one way. The biggest hill would be the 117 just east of 190
(hit by both the 117 and Brockelman permutations). No threatening dogs on
any of the routes listed. The Brockelman (George Hill) way goes by an apple
orchard with trees planted fairly close to the road; something to keep in
mind come September.
