1496.0. "Mt Wachusett" by WAV14::DELORIEA (Time to make the jerseys) Mon Apr 09 1990 20:16

FYI...

I was out for a ride to Mt Wachusett yesterday trying to get those climbing
muscles into shape and found the road to the summit was plowed. No cars are
allowed up the road yet, you need to sneak around the gate. They must of needed
a front end loader to clean the snow where the ski trail crossed the road,
because there was a wall off snow about 10 feet high on both sides of the road.
Pretty COOL sight riding through. So all you hill climbers looking for a work
out... The road is open (well, kind of)

    	Tom,

You guys who look for hills/mountains to climb need:

A CHECKUP FROM THE NECK UP!!!

I guess you can tell I don't like hills.

Ooooh I really feel sorry for all those skiers.

Thanks for letting us know. I figured I would wait a week or two
before I went to see if they had plowed. I have been doing my training
on Mt. Sugarloaf in Sunderland and Mt. Holyoke. I didn't realize how
much leg strength I had lost until I hit the 25% grade on Sugarloaf
    a few weeks ago.

Anyone know if West Side Road/Balance Rock Road up the back side of
    Wachusett is mountain-bike legal????

I went there on Saturday and saw a sign at the West Side Road parking area
that said "Mountain biking not allowed on hiking trails" which I do
respect....but, the State Park brochure clearly states West Side Road is
an access road, not a hiking trail. So I biked it!

It would be heinous if mountain biking is not allowed there since thhe
State Park and Ski Area use it for maintenance.

    					Rage!

Use good judgement though: most of the "roads" are nothing more than
mud after it rains, and mtn bikes can leave huge ruts. I use the
slightly longer, but "paved" (loose term here folks) Admin Road
when going up on the south side in the late winter/springtime or
after it rains and avoid Echo Lake Road, which has the same sign.

1496.71995: The snow is off the roads to the summit.HANNAH::SMITHMichael J. Smith: MRO1-2/K20Wed Apr 26 1995 09:576
The roads are clear of snow. Watch out for litter from skiiers,
glass, plastic, etc. Lots of sticks and twigs too.

I did see one skiier crossing (walking) the road on skis. There
have been snowboarders doing jumps. I have not seen them try and
jump the road as yet, but you never know.
