1423.0. "Advice on bringing a Bike to PHASE_V Training" by CSC32::R_SMITH (Save the AIR ride a Bicycle) Wed Feb 07 1990 19:25

I am coming East for DECnet Phase_V field test training and
I want to know if it is adviseable to bring a bicycle. I'll
be staying in DEC housing (in or near Lowell) the training is
in Bedford I think. I'll get real depressed if I'm away from
my bike that long. I have a racing bike, a touring bike and
mountain bike. Which would be best to bring? I'm thinking of
bring the touring bike with cyclo-cross tires and possibly fenders.

What I'd really like to do is commute to class on the bike.
I haven't been to Bedford since the late seventies so I'm pretty
out of touch. Living in Colorado Springs where I can commute to
work most every day of the year. I'll arrive on Feb 18th and leave
    Mar 9th.

If commuting is possible, then could someone recommend routes, etc.
Another problem is that we 8 people from the Springs attending this
training and we have only 3 cars between us.

Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

1423.1bring your bike anyway!SHALOT::ELLISJohn Lee Ellis - assembly requiredWed Feb 07 1990 22:1116
If I were in your position, I'd bring my bike. I might consider
the mountain bike, though, just because of the dodgy road-conditions
that can crop up. When I got to Eastern Mass a week ago, the ground
was bare; next morning, snow cover. You'd hate to hit a dry spell
without a bike - at least I would.

Where is the Phase V training? LKG or ZK? (or Bedford?) As we've
seen here, ZKO3 has a Wellness Center. You could pretend to be a ZK
inmate (see previous notes). I'd almost rather run outside than bike
    indoors, though.

If you're there for the weekend, check out the GSW schedule (Ed Fisher,
    president).

    Have fun!

Bob, if you follow John's advice, be sure that you
state that you are Bob and not *Jerry* Smith or you'll
be asked to take your clinchers over the river to Hudson
(GSF) where the *other* Digital engineers live :-)

All kidding aside, Ed Fisher and Dani Martin run
GSW club rides from ZKO (Sheraton Paring Lot) each
Tuesday and Thurday afternoon (lunch time) and I
run a full blown club ride each Saturday morning from
Alexanders Parking lot in Amherst N.H.(just up the road
from ZKO - Route 3). Bedford is about 30 minutes (no traffic)
from ZKO also on Route 3 heading north to N.H. Join us
    if you can. Regards.

If you're training at the Bedford, Mass. training facility, your best
route by car is route 3. That's a limited access highway and you can't
cycle on it (you're taking your chances in a car). I think you have a
choice of secondary routes with connecting back roads for cycling,
depending on where you're staying in Lowell. Route 3A south to route 62
west isn't bad. Route 4 south to route 62 east isn't bad, excepting
parts of route 62 which are very narrow. The Bedford training facility
is at the intersection of routes 3 and 62.

Bring a bike with mudguards and heavy HP clinchers. Don't forget your
    helmet.

1423.4Burlington VT, anyone?DEBUG::SCHULDTI'm Occupant!Thu Feb 08 1990 15:286
In a similar vein, I'll be visiting Burlington VT for four weeks
starting March 19 for VAX 9000 school. Can anyone tell me what
the weather is like at that time of year? Is it worth it to bring
the bike out that early? Any good riding around there?

    Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You could bring either your road bike or mountain bike. Could be a bit
early in March, but with New England weather, you can't be sure.
The riding in Northern Vermont is Great!

    Bring your skis too.

Unrelated, but if you plan to take Rt. 3, you'll want a rent-a-car
capable of doing 75-85 mph, or you'll be in deep sneakers.... :-)

But the rent a car should have enormous bumpers and 4 wheel drive
capability so you can drive in the lane on the right side of the break
down lane if the break down lane is full.

1423.8I think I'll rent a bike..CSC32::R_SMITHSave the AIR ride a BicycleFri Feb 16 1990 21:2016

Thanks for all the advice. I've tried to get into this several
times this week but our cluster has been real flakey.

The training is at Northeastern Univ in Burlington and I'll be
staying at the Princeton Park Apts in Lowell. I guess I'll be
driving Route 3. I think I'll leave the bike at home. Is there
any bike shops that I can rent from for the two weekends of
    Feb 24-25 and Mar 3-4?

I should be able to rent for the price of air transportation
and run the risk of breakage. From what I understand I'll be
real busy during the week days and wont have time to ride anyway.

    Thanks,
    Bob
