1407.0. "What's cycling in St. Louis, Mo area like?" by NAC::KLASMAN () Thu Jan 11 1990 16:23

My wife Lisa and I are considering relocating to St. Louis, and were wondering
what the area is like, from a cyclist's perspective. For anyone who doesn't
know, we're both ultra-marathoner's and like to ride... A LOT! There seems to
be a lot of long distance events in the area (within a 6-hr drive or so)...
does that mean that there's an active long distance community? Or do only a
handful of people show up for these rides (like here in New England... no
offense, Ed!)

What are the roads like; the weather; the motorists, etc?

Thanks,

Kevin

You're gonna hafta ride some to capture the UMCA in MO. Bob Harting's
got it tied up most of the time. :-)

I've seen reports of lots of attendance in MO.

I'm not worried too much about that. If UMCA creates a tandem division, Lisa
and I can shoot for that.

Anyway, don't start missing me yet... I'm still "just looking"!

Well, I moved from St. Louis to Denver about a year ago, but I can tell
you a few things. There are lots of cyclists in St. Louis; AYH runs a
full calendar of rides throughout the year, and they are well attended.
There are a number of centuries in the area, also very well attended
(hundreds of riders). There is a very popular Double Century (or more,
if you're up for it) in Litchfield IL every year.

You'll find a variety of terrain, from the Missouri and Mississippi
River floodplains to the rolling (sometimes steep) foothills of the
    Ozarks.

One downside to cycling in St. Louis: if you live within a 20 minute
commute of the DEC office, you'll still be in the midst of a large
urban area (translation: traffic, and narrow or no shoulders). And St.
Louis also has its fair share of "hoosiers," the Missouri word for
redneck. These folks will harrass anyone in lycra from time to time,
    just for sport.

But if you pick your home carefully (west St. Louis Cty. or St Charles
Co. for instance) you should be able to continue to enjoy your cycling
    lifestyle.

Suggest you contact Susan Moore in the St. Louis Field Service
organization. STO number is 314-991-6400. Susan did the Ironman a few
years back and is still actively pursuing triatholons.

Thanks for the suggestion, but we've decided to stay put in NH, at least for a
couple more years.
