1390.0. "Advice for a Novice ;-)" by EXIT26::SAARINEN () Thu Dec 28 1989 16:10

I was on my stationary bike last night, and using my
imagination to it fullest extent, I pictured myself
at the Tour de France '89, on the Champs Elysees, gripping
tightly on my Profile aero bars, blasting thru the
last time trial at a record breaking pace. Plus trying to
stay warm in my apartment...brrr.

Well Greg LeMond as we all know rode the last 15.5 mile time trial
at the TdF in 26.9409 minutes, averaging a speed of 34.52 mph.

On my Cateye bike computer, as I was hammering thru the
streets of Paris, with the crowds cheering me on...I noticed that
at the 26.9409 minute mark, I had gone 12.95 miles... and at the
30 minute mark, when I *quit* no matter what, I had only gone 14.40 miles.
1.1 mile short.

Should I have worn an Aero helmet and cut off my beard to
get a more aerodynamic advantage?

By all means ...Yes. Shave your beard AND your legs too!
The French would not take kindly to a hairy-legged cyclist :)

1390.2You must take course and conditions into account, also screaming fans.CLYPPR::FISHERPat PendingThu Dec 28 1989 16:335
No. You should have openned the windows and put a book under the back
of the trainer so that you would also have had a slight tailwind and a
    downhill course.

Thanks for the insights ya'lll I appreciate them...and I'll be
sure to add them to my training schedule. Look out Greg... ;-)

    But in all seriousness...

     *choke*hack*cough*

Does anyone know...if there is any records for stationary bicycle
riding...??? Such as...someone riding for eight days straight on
a turbo trainer to simulate like a RAAM crossing or something
     braindead like that?

     Just wondering.

Well, there is a 24-hr roller record, if that helps.... I read a story
about it some years ago. As I recall, John Howard set a new record of
something like 450 (?) miles in a 24 hr. period. may or may not still be
current....

Some other of Greg's advantages occurred to me while riding today
(in Charlotte with John). The humidity is higher in Paris. The
advantage of time-trialing in damp air is discussed in another note
    in this conference.

Also, did you have an aero seatpost? Did you attend to your
shoelaces? Use a disk wheel or two?

1390.7NINTENDO knows how to do it right..ask them..SALEM::SEGUINThu Feb 15 1990 03:255
Hey, maybe NINTENDO can find the market for your idea..after all
if you were to place the stationery bike in front of a television
set, preferably the 56" screen, you could actually find yourself
pedalling through the streets of Paris...
