1388.0. "1990 miles" by VERVE::BUCHANAN (Bat) Wed Dec 27 1989 16:08

With New Years coming it might be a good time to reset your cyclometer.
That way you'll know how many miles you ride this year.

I thought it also might be fun if we made some predictions on our
expected mileage this year, not a contest, after all with some of the
big gun like Ellis, Fisher, etc. surely going to hit 5 digits the rest
of us don't stand a prayer.

We also might use this note to check in throughout the year to report
hitting some milestones (first 500, 1000, etc.).

    *********

Note on cyclometers - a local shop showed me the coming ad for the new
Avocet 50 cyclometer. It will measure current altitude and total
climbing for a ride. Sounds great for those of us who live in hilly
areas. It was due out in March-April but now looks more like May-June.
This shop owner sponsors some cyclo-cross riders and Avocet is a
co-sponsor so he will be getting a test version soon after the new
year. He thought the retail price would be in the $50 range, not bad
since you can usually find a sale which should push the price down to
    the $40 range.

    I'll start with my predictions.

I think I should get in about 6000 this next year. This is for the
road bike only, I'll add a few more on the mountain bike which doesn't
have a cyclometer, but not more than a couple hundred.

Of course I'd love to do more but since I'd like to keep my wife and
two children I think 6000 is about as much as I can possibly get in.

    Bat,

Well you didn't enter the guest registry (note 5) so I don't know
where you live. Some of our far western compatriots have a measurable
advantage, if you know what I mean.

I also don't know your first name but I assume that Bat is an
acceptable handle. Though the only person I know as "Bat" is a female
    :-)

Ok, my goal for 1990. I'll stick my neck out and say that I'd like
to hit 10000 again before I get too old. These days even a 100 takes
longer than it used to. (and a 1000 might take as much as a week. :-)

    for 1989? 11,2xx.

But it sure is cold outside these days, eh?

I ended up with just over 2700 miles on my bike this year. Most of it was my 28
mile round trip to work and home adding up day after day. Due to the mild
winter last year here in Massachusetts I got off to an early start and was
riding quite a lot in the early months of the year. I doubt I'll be doing the
same this year. Starting January 8th I'll be working in LWO or WAO, both are
about 40 miles from home. Now I'd love to do the 80 miles. I'd really get into
good shape, but my new job is supporting an ALL-IN-1 system, which I doubt will
be an 8:15-5:00 job. No showers in WAO also. So if you happen to be in WAO
around 7:00 some night after a thunderstorm and you see a pudgy guy in an office
that has Greg LeMond posters on the walls say hi to me :-)

So I predict around 1000 miles next year. Most of it will be from Saturday
rides that start around 5:00 in the morning so I can get home to spend time
with my wife and kids.

Hopefully, 1990 will bring 2000+ miles. I also find it very tough
riding, since the 'baby' arrived 2 years ago. I hope to ride back
and forth to work in YWO(60 miles) or FXO(18 miles + some added
    mileage before/after work)..

Last year, I only put in some 800 miles (don't every make the yearly
kanc. ride) Hopefully, I'll be in shape to do it this year (what
do you think ed)? I did it with ed two years ago in the rain/fog/wind/cold.
    (ed goes boom over tracks).

My current weight is about 182, two years(1988) when I rode 1500+
miles I weighted 160.. Boy, is it going to be tough getting back
on that bike with 20+ added pounds.

Three years ago (the first year I kept track of miles) I did ~500; last year
was ~1000, and this year was ~1400. Given that history, I'd like to reach
2000 miles next year. I didn't use the bike for commuting this year as I did
the previous two, so if I get back to using it for commuting, then I don't think
I'll have any trouble reaching my goal.

I did about 5000 this year, and didn't do too much until March and
April.....so I guess I'll sign up for ABOUT the same as 'Bat'
Buchanan...otherwise known as Mike. And I'll toss in a few hundred on the fat
tires too...and since we're on a roll here, I'll do at least 110-120 of the

in the flat lands of Northern California.

1388.9the golden wheel and meBALMER::MUDGETTdid you say FREE food?Wed Dec 27 1989 21:2824
    Greetings from Baltimore,

I'm going to try to do a thing Bicycling has called the golden wheel
which is 10,000 in a year. They did a story on some old geezer who
lives in Florida and finished the 10 grand early. I was shocked
lets see what this guy had going for him:
    1. Flordia is as flat as a DEC pay scale.
    2. They have to worry more about alligators than snow.
    3. The guy was retired so no demands on his time.

    Now lets see my schedule:
    1. I live in the mountians.
    2. I work in field (or some name) service, which means everyone
wants me to work at night, after all we couldn't have users bothered
    during the day.
    3. I have a wife and 3 (soon to be 4) kids and they love me (for
some odd reason) and at least one child likes to ride with me and
    he is slower than mollasses.

So I'm going to try doing 10 grand this year but I suspect I'll
make 5,000+. But if I do someone ought to really think I'm terrific
for the above reasons, don't you think?

Well, I feel better now that I've read ALL the replies... All this
talk of 10,000 and 5,000 and 8 million miles/year was intimidating me.
I thought I was doing perty good to get in my 1000.4 (the .4 is
    important!) miles this year.

But, this note came at a good time. I was just trying to decide my
goals for 1990 the other day... I made 1000 this year, so I'm going to
try for 1500 next year. I would also like to ride in a metric century.

If I was in the office I could ride the 15 miles each way, but
unfortunately, I'm stuck at a customer site that isn't in a location I
can ride to. So, I'll have to do my riding in my spare time. Can I
count the mileage on my trainer this winter?

Well, I've done over 7000 each of the last two years. I'd planned on riding
10000 this year, but getting married and a foot injury interfered. Hopefully
next year I can reach the 10000 mile mark.

The question is: will I gain anything by riding the extra 3000 miles, other
than NPC points?

I may be thinking to big but I am going to shoot for 5000 miles on the
moutian bike and most of the miles will be off road. I get in another
1000+ on the road bike. As for altitude, I would like to break 150,000
feet in climbing, again off road. (The new Avocet 50 will be great for
    this)

Not sure what I road this year. I don't have a computer on the MTB at
this point.... Must be greater than 3000... However only abt 500 on the
    road bike...

If you can't tell I LOVE the MTB.....

re: "Can I count the mileage on my trainer this winter?"

You can count anything you want to, it's your log book. :-)

I count them. I don't equate them with road miles because it's not the
same and of course, your trainer's different from mine, being in the
midwest and all where there are no hills :-) :-).

There is no comparison at all between road bike miles and mountain bike
    miles spent off-road.

As for Kevin's question concerning the difference between 7000 and
10000 miles, I think the difference depends on why you ride. If you
ride to train and compete then there may be nothing to gain from it.
If you ride for the health of it, you are probably gaining nothing.
If you ride mostly because you enjoy riding then there is a large
    difference.

[meandering from the topic]I saw a chart once that indicated the health
benefits of riding and somewhere after 3000 miles a year the longevity
of the riders began to decrease. I figure that's because up to 3000
they are improving their general health and that's the biggest factor.
After 3000 any health improvement is negligible but they are increasing
their exposure to being run off the road by the dangerous elements such
as whacko drivers, moving vans, cement trucks, rothweilers, dobie's, etc.

    Another Colorado Rider here.

    I managed a little over 3400 miles this year (1500 in 1988 when I
started riding again) and hope to get somewhere around 4500 in 1990.
I would also like to do some racing but know nothing at all about
the sport. I am also seriously considering coming back east to ride
    in the 1990 PMC.

I haven't figured out a specific mileage goal. The 25,000 range
is good because it generally keeps you out of (other) mischief. :-)
But I would like to do more touring and mountain work this year,
which would cut into the mileage. (The only mountain ride in 1989
was the Mount Mitchell assault ... well, and Mont Vernon NH a couple
    of times.)

Ed's comparison of 7000 to 10000+ miles was great. This gets to
the heart of the matter. Beyond a certain point, added mileage's
chief effect (benefit?) is mental (no smart remarks here!). To ride
in that range, you tend to be more physically conservative than if
you were a 2500-mpy criterium competitor. You have to be careful
at that mileage just to keep your body in one piece! So ironically,
doing the long mileage may be less destructive than a year of
wind-sprints ... though of course less outwardly dramatic.

A good cycling year to all!

Hmmmm. Finishing the addition to my house should keep my idle mind
and body occupied most of 1990, so it looks like a year of events
    rather than miles:
The Avatar is off in California or some place getting it's first
new paint job in 10 years - Happy Birthday favorite bike! When it
returns, it gets upgraded to Hyperglide components. That, and a new
aluminum seat (to replace the 7 lb steel replacement for the broken
aluminum one) should leave me with no excuses.
Events: GEAR in New London in June

Well, since Ed brought it up, I ride for two reasons. One is because I enjoy
it alot, tho as Ed can attest, its not for the social aspect! But I also ride
for performance, and to achieve certain goals, and its in that respect that I
wonder about the additional miles. 7000+ miles and 400+ hours on the bike are
about all the enjoyment I need in one year... after all, there are other
things to life than cycling (oops... did I say that!?). It would be nice if I
could improve on my performance by training smarter, not longer, but that's a
topic for another note...

In fact I won't be using a computer. The only thing I will be using is
a watch and a known measured distance. I hate the feeling of thinking
I must be close to the end of a century. Then I look at the computer

This looks weedy besides the long-haul cyclists who have already
replied but when I zeroed the computer yesterday morning it was reading
2095. I asked it, "Can I keep those miles, please?" and it said, "Stop
arguing. Press the buttons." After briefly deliberating whether or not
to switch to km (I decided to do so by 1992, but the time is not yet
right) I pressed the buttons and watched those sweated-for miles
disappear. After lunch I went out for a hilly 24 miles on a cold and
latterly rainy afternoon. Brownie points for that?

This year I'd like to do at least 3000 which shouldn't be too difficult
since last year I only started in April and didn't have a touring
holiday. Also, if I train hard, I would be very pleased to do a
    sub-hour 25.

Of course I may have to sacrifice some money and buy a new bike to
achieve this aim, but I feel prepared to swallow that bitter pill.

I passed 3,500 last year during the parade ride prior to the Pan-Mass

almost a 50-mile/day round-trip ride to work (Newburyport to Tewksbury)
which I should be able to do at least twice a week (too many off-site
meetings on other days). A few centuries and maybe a shot at a double
this summer and I should make it.

Hooked on touring bikes, but thinking about speeding up a bit. I tour
now at between 17.5 and 20 mph; is it unreasonable to shoot for between
20 and 25 mph this year? (This will be my third year cycling, and I've
never been one for sprints or races.)

Well, last year was my first year on a bike, and I turned in only
600 miles on the road bike, and maybe 150-250 on the Mt. Bike.

I had lots of fun and found out just how out of shape I was. The
toughest ride I had was an afternoon ride from S.Deerfield to Conway
to Ashfield to Shelburn Falls to Greenfield and back to S. Deerfield.
    A distance of 43.5 miles.

This was all in the hills RT 116, RT 112, RT 2, and the last leg
on RT 5 was flat. All on one bananana and a turkey sandwich.

Well, for this year I want to do 1200 miles. I also want to do
a centry for the first time. I feel that if I set aside a whole
day for biking (not just a morning or afternoon) that half centries
    should not be a problem.

I did get to my goal of an average speed of 23.5mph on my training
route of 15 miles. And I DID take 4th in the WFO "Tour de Digital"
    NBD.

Sign me up for 5k miles this year. I did 4k+ the past two years.
Work keeps interfering with my cycling so I think that with family
responsibilities my goal will be a challenge.

I'd also like to do a 25mph time trial (being a purest, it was a
real compromise to buy areo bars for the coming season), as well as
the Mt. Washington road race, the PMC again, etc, etc...

I'm taking advantage of the January thaw today at lunch time. I
hope have only 4980 miles to go after lunch.

The Tour Digital is a 1 mile Loop Crit. It is as flat as a pancake.
We were hoping to let the other DEC. plants join in. The course
is around Westfield plant. There are two 90 degrees turns, the rest
of the turn are long looping turns. I would love to have some
competition. last year I won hands down. I lap everybody at lease
once. I finish the 15 lap/15 mile course in around 33 mins. It was
like a time trial after the first lap. I always hear of everybody
out eastern Mass. talking about all these mile there ride. I was
lucky to get in about 1000 mile last year. But I was able to stay
in the top ten in almost every race as a Cat III And won the gold
in the district Crit CAT IV and took third in the district road
race as a CAT IV. I think it not how many mile you put in but how

Mike, I applaud your racing success and your imperturbable
lust for winning. That's what makes a racer. Keep it up.

Of course you are right: it's not the number of miles, it's
how hard you work at it. Well, almost right. I think you
mean, "It's what the miles mean." Look at what ed fisher
said a few days ago. If you love spending a whole day on
    the bike, then a single 25-mile-hour (or a 30-mile-hour,
or two of them, or a Greg Lemond 34mph TT) won't be the same.

I think your level of performance at 1000 or 2000 miles is
great. But don't put down those who are excelling in other
dimensions. Franz Spilauer had a successful racing career.
But he decided to "top it off" by winning an endurance event -
    RAAM '88.

By the way, good luck with your 1990.

I'm a bit of an over-achiever; though the year isn't quite over I've
already got 3750. I suspect that I can get another 50 miles in in the
next 10 days. My original estimate was 2000, I later upped it to 2500
when I was a bit ahead of schedule, but now I've almost doubled my
original estimate. Why, you ask? Well, the governments of Masschusetts
and Iraq are to be thanked. Because of the rising cost of gasoline I
have been doing a good deal of my commuting on the bike since August 1.

    I suppose that it's time to come up with an estimate for next year now;
I'm going to try for 4500. About 1/2 of that will come from commuting,
I hope to average 4 days a week next year.

Well I did end up on working out of LWO in Lowell. I lost track of how many
times I did the commute but it must of been most of the miles I did this
year. I started by driving 10 miles and riding thirty miles each way and in a
few rides I was ready for the 80 round trip. I will truely miss those early
morning rides into work on Rt70 and Rt110. The rides home were quite a
challenge. There was a lot of steady climbing around Harvard and from Clinton
to Worcester. I even had company on one morning when Mark Reid joined me on the
ride in.

Wrong. I ended up with 2,400 miles on my good bike. Commutes and lunch time
rides with only one real Century ride.

About another 250 on my winter beater on small rides and one commute.

A good year for me. I got to ride and spend time with the family.
