Charles River Wheelmen To Participate In

		"NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF THE OUTDOORS"

		Environmental Awareness Program

Population and development increases have placed tremendous pressure
on our quality of life and environment in the last few years. Water
and air pollution, open space needs, traffic congestion, and just
plain ugly surroundings are just a few of the resulting concerns.

CRW will be joining the League of American Wheelmen and other
prestigious organizations such as the Sierra Club, Environmental
Defense Fund, the American Hiking Society, and the National
Geographic Society in calling attention to our environmental crisis.

The "National Celebration of the Outdoors" will start on the 20th
anniversary of Earth Day, Sunday April 22, 1990 with a goal of
involving over 100 million people!

CRW is hoping to play a major Boston area part with the help of many
of our over 700 members -- to help publicize our concern, including
the fact that the bicycle can play a part in alleviating some of the
problem. Specifically:

1.	We plan on playing a part in Earth Day 1990.

2.	We intend to make all of our (May) Bike month activities,
including the Spring Century Celebration, part of the National
Celebration of the Outdoors.

3.	We plan to provide a LOUD welcoming committee to the
participants of "Pedal for Power" when it ends its bicycle trek from
Los Angeles to Boston on June 27, 1990 (yes, that is a Wednesday).
(If you might like to participate in the ride itself, just give me
a call).

4.	Other activities we haven't thought of yet.

We need to start planning all this right away. If you might like to
participate in some aspect of this monumental Environmental Action
Program, do give me a call. Earth needs our help, and we cyclists
want to do our share.

They are:

1.	How to: Repeal a Mandatory Sidepath Law

2.	How to: Get Bicycle Access to Bridges

3.	How to: Get Federal & Local Funds for Bicycle Projects

4.	How to: Promote Bicycling as a Pollution Solution

5.	[More are on the way]

If you want some of your own, just give me a call.

    re: Is your club involved?

I don't know. Let's ask the new Pres. of the GSW.

Ed, is the GSW involved in the Nat'l Outdoors Celebration.
Seems like we should be but this should not be taken as
an invitation to volunteer me to find out :-)

BTW - According to Pedal Talk (GSW Newsletter) Ed Fisher was nominated
but I haven't heard anything else about it, the guy is so
     	  modest about such things :-)

YES, Jerry, at the recent election I was
elected Pres for the coming year which begins at the Banquet.

I have, as yet, heard no reference to the NOC from the GSW. I will
take that as an action item for my first board meeting.

See, note that use of the term "action item", I have learned something
from my career as a digit.
