1254.0. "Novice RAGBRAI rider" by RAINBO::RBROWN () Thu Jul 20 1989 14:36

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to the conference and relatively new to biking.
I'm leaving Saturday for Iowa to ride in RAGBRAI '89. Can anyone
give me some tips, anything at all, for a first time RAGBRAIer?
In case you don't know what that is, it's the Des Moine Register's
Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. It's a hilly 479 miles in 7
days across Iowa beginning at the Missouri River and ending at the
Mississippi. I know it's only 2 days til the ride, but anything you
have to offer, I'd appreciate it. I'll let you know how the ride went
when I get back, if I live! see ya

Russ and I work in the same building. I just gave him a
few suggestions that should make the ride easier.

BTW, he's a great physical shape, so that should not be
    	a problem.

Well, folks, I'm back and I still like biking. RAGBRAI was a lot more
than I bargained for. The riding was a little tougher than I expected
but not too bad. The last 3 days with back to back 86 milers and a
rainy last day were the worst. Don't let anyone ever tell you Iowa is
flat. The people were great on the ride. Most of the riders were from
Iowa or Nebraska or a nearby state, however, we met people from all
over the country and a few from Mass. The beer tasted great in Iowa
too! All in all it was a fabulous time and I'd do it again.

Note 1017 was set up to discuss this year's RAGBRAI XVII. I put in
several notes requesting information on other DECcies who might be
going and no one ever replied.

Glad you had a good time. This was my 4th RAGBRAI and won't be my
last. The weather was beautiful! Last year it was 100+ every day.
Remember how hot it was on the day we rode into Cedar Falls (the
UNIdome?). It was only 93 that day!

How did you like the different 'TEAMS'?

TEAM ME OFF HOOTERS TEAM GUMBY TEAM LIARS
    TEAM DAIRY AIRE

I was with a group called the COLORADO HIGHWAY PATROL. Although we
were a small group of about 13 it seemed that everyone I met had at
least seen our floresant ORANGE t-shirts. We had one person who rode
in the women's criterium in Atlantic.

    RAGBRAI XVIII ?

    We're already planning.

I know it's a bit late for this now, but here' goes...

    	I performed the following: DIR /ALL /TITLE="RAGB"

And received the following in return:

    	TOPIC#.REPLY#
    	-----
    	   5.94
    	 264
    	 408.8
    	 439
    	 604
    	1017
    	1254

I would venture to say there are alot of DEC personnel attending
this event, more so with each running (riding).

If you examine each entry, there isn't one viably authentic
    	mention of sorrow, or regret.

You've experienced it first hand now, so there's one more DECcie
(using this conference) who will spread the good word.

Big assumption here: probably not every biker, who works for
DEC, & does RAGBRAI, peruses this particular conference. Or
perhaps if they do, they don't want their identity listed here.

        >Note 1017 was set up to discuss this year's RAGBRAI XVII. I put in
    	>several notes requesting information on other DECcies who might be
    	>going and no one ever replied.

I don't need to say this either, but...

Don't get discouraged Mike, if few respond to your inquiries.
Not every biker thrives on the beneficial exchange of data.

Perhaps, in the first months of 1990, some attentive individual
will start a new topic for Ragbrai VXIII ?

Happy riding to all, even if they don't "do Iowa".
