1206.0. "Observed Trials Competition" by EXIT26::SAARINEN () Wed Jun 14 1989 16:28

Does anyone know of any "Observed Trials" competitions in
the New England area this Summer? I have never been to any
before but I am interested in seeing them. The idea is to
ride a mountain bike over an obstacle type course. Like
picnic tables and large boulder type obstacles,as well as
jumping logs, and driving threw sand and all, so I have
heard. And everytime the rider looses balance and has to
place a foot down, points are scored against him. If the
rider falls, even more points are scored against him.

The rider who rides the obstacle course with the least
amount of points scored against him wins.
To me it sounds like a interesting type of competition.

    Anyone know?

Check out the New England Mt. Bike Championships at Mt. Snow Vermont.
This will be on July 29&30.
They will have the professional observed trials as well as people
like you and me doing stock bike trials. Last year they had Jim
Trigonis (at the time ranked #3 in the world) cleaning seemingly
impossible courses. This year they expect to have all the best
    "riders".
One of the riders last year told me he practices balance recovery
by putting 2 inflated basketballs in the driveway. He then puts
the bike on top of them and sits on the bike.
I later saw this person doing a nose wheely down a 45 degree hill.
I plan to judge some of the stock bike trials so if you plan to
come stop by and say hi. Just look for the pink, white and blue
    Klein Top Gun.

Sorry I forgot. The championships will also have a 2.2 mile hill
climb, a downhill slalom and a circuit race.

    Thanks for the information Norm,
I will be up there in July, this
sound just what I am looking for.
I'd like to learn some of the
    Trials Riding Techniques myself,
and hope to pick up on some while
    I am there.
