1172.0. "riding while pregnant" by TLE::SCHUTZMAN (We are here and it is now.) Thu May 18 1989 12:29

My wife is currently 4 months pregnant and can no longer ride her
bike comfortably. We are looking for something to get through the
summer without giving up on riding.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

1172.1What's a sting ray??TRINUT::CAMPBELLThu May 18 1989 13:047

If the discomfort is from hunching over, how about trying some
mountain bike bars, or maybe some old "sting ray" bars. They
would allow her to sit upright...

1172.2PREPARING FOR THE NEW CYCLISTAKOV11::FULLERThu May 18 1989 13:5019
My wife recently gave birth (last thursday). Because she waw
pregnant through the winder, she basically gave up cycling and
resorted to hiking, doctors request. Unless your wife is a high
risk pregnany, she can probably ride to well near then end. I have
been cycling with a 6 month pregnant woman. She is riding a mountain
bike, smaller frame size than normal for her and she says it is
    comfortable.

If your wife does ride, make sure to keep her pulse down. Hard
exersion takes oxygen away from the baby. Be satisfied with
keeping the pulse under 130. Hills are most prone to increase
    pulse beyond the save zone.

There are a few good articles in recent Bicycling (April) about cycling
pregnant and getting into shape afterwards.

Sheila Young-Oschewicz rode to the hospital for her delivery. Anything
is possible as long as Bonnie can keep her pulse rate from climbing too
high -- which is difficult in NH.

Of course, Sheila was probably put into a wheelchair as soon as she got
    to the hospital.

Are you sure it was Sheila Young? Miji Reoch is legendary for going into
labor on a training ride (labor started while she was giving a teenage boy a
lecture on proper riding technique), and she then rode another 13 miles to the
hospital.

I've always wondered what they did with her bicycle...

Miji Reoch? It may have been she. I thought it was Sheila. I'll
have to spend next winter going through my old mags to find the
    story.

It was Mary Jane (Miji) Reoch. I used to ride with her back in
    Phila. (although I wasn't the teenage boy... :') )

Thanks for the advice. Our present solution is Georges Tandem.
The back seat which Bonnie rides on with streight handle bars allows
her to sit in a comfortable position. With the two of us on it takes
care of the problems of balance and exertion.
