thank you for the information, however there is a conference for bike
racing already in existence.  It is OPG::CYCLE_RACING.  You will find
a discussion about the TdT in 95.*

What's wrong with posting the info here??

I'm interested. I'm sure that there are other non-racers who don't have 
the time to read two notesfiles on bikes who are interested.

Post the results. I will read with interest!

Are you familiar with the word REDUNDANCY!!!!

    This was the first major Pro stage race that I have been to and I was
very excited about the whole Idea of seeing some of my Hero's.

   I was not able to get to Albany for the prologue. I did get to New Paltz
for the finish of the first road stage. New Paltz is a small college town that
is pretty much in the middle of nowhere about 2-3 Hrs north of N.Y. city.
I arrived early and found a good spot just behind the NBC camera to watch the
race finish, from where I was standing I could see the last half mile or so
of the race coming towards me. I was torn between actually watching the race and
taking pictures at the same time. The support caravan came in well in advance of
the riders. On of the Vans got that was a bit to high got one of its time trial
bikes caught on the finish banner by the seat and actually ripped the bike off
the rack. The finish was very exciting. The announcer did a good job of getting
everybody hyped up and there was a lot of noise and applause as the Ekimov beat
out Thuinese(sp) for the finish in an uphill sprint. It looked like he got him
by no more than about a half a wheel length.

   When the stage was over I Began working my way over to where the team vans
were all parked. I said Hello to the Russian amateur Team. Even though they had
no Idea what I was saying they still smiled and posed for a picture for me !!
   What happened next was really great. I ran into most of team USA relaxing
after the race. I then Introduced my self and had a 20 minute conversation
with Steve Larsen, John Frey and Kent Bostick about the race and what happened
during the stage. What kind of gearing were they using and all kinds of other
great stuff. The Pros were nowhere to be found at the finish, they were most
likely already on there way to N.Y. city. 

   Sunday, Up early and off to N.Y. city for the start of the next stage. I was
staying at my sisters house in Croton on the Hudson about 45 minutes out of the
city and the ride in was actually pleasant and the excitement was really 
starting to build up. Once in the City we found a nearby parking garage and 
headed right for the starting line. It was now an Hour before the race and I
went right into the caravan of team cars and started looking for the Pros.
   The first car I came to was Team 7-11. I saw Andy Hampsten and Introduced 
myself. He returned in kind and I asked how he was doing. He said fine. Andy
was very quiet and reserved but also very nice. I asked if would do a picture
with me and he said sure and I had my Brother in law snap a couple of pictures
of me and Andy standing in front of his bike. I did the same thing with 
Ron Kiefal and then said Hello to Dag-otto Lauritzen. This was incredible !!
here I was talking with all these guys that I see in the magazines and read 
winning in the big European races. This was almost as good as sex ! Next I
made my way over to the PDM van. I was taking a close look at one of the team
bicycle that was leaning against the wall by the van and Stephen Rooks comes
over and hops on right in front of me. Yow !! I don't think I'm ever going to
come down from this. He rode off and next I located the Panasonic Team. I did
not recognize Theo DeRooy Until It was to late to say Hi. I did however get in 
very close to Eric Vanderarden While He was getting ready and got some good 
Pictures of him getting ready. A small note here, One of the last things that
Vanderarden did was put on a Helmet. From there I went in search of Lemond.
I did find him but he was checking on his bike and the race was about to begin
so I did not get the opportunity to approach Him.

   Instead of trying to get in a good spot at the starting line I went down the
course a bit and found a spot where the course kind of looped around the first
corner. By the way if anyone taped NBC's coverage of the start you will see my
back as the riders go around the first corner I'm on the Grass Island with a 
white T-shirt that has the Varnuet(sp) Emblem on the back. Between Myself and
my Brother-in-law we took over 30 pictures of the start alone.


   I did not see the race again until the next day when I intercepted it at
Ft. Indianpoint gap at about the hundred mile mark. The race flew bye heading
into Harrisburg. I was able to drive into Harrisburg and locate the finish
line about 4 minutes before the race showed up. The finish was half way out onto
a bridge and got to watch Phinney and Vanderarden battle it out for the sprint.
Vanderarden led out right from the last corner and still won the Sprint !!!


   Unfortunately My wife was running out of Patience and My budget was Running
out of money so this was all I was able to watch But I will not soon forget 
this experience and you bet I'll be there again next year.

If you are worried about this, (your tone implies this...) then combine 
the two files. The "redundancy" starts with the names of the notes 
files.....

If someone who reads NOTES can't tell that CYCLE_RACING is for racing and
not general bicycling topics I would be highly surprised.

    I can't help, but stick my $.02 worth into this rat hole.
    
    I can't figure out way there are 2 Conferences to start with.  Many of the
    topic in this notes conf. are about racing.  TT's, centuries, the BMB,
    Racing bikes/frames.... Recently a note/topic was started to see who
    would be interested in a Corp. racing team.
    
    This is definitely not a conference for "Sunday Riders".
    
    So, why are there 2 notes Conf's?  (is it "easier" on the host
    systems?)

    At first, I opposed the creation of the CYCLE_RACING conference,
    but now I'm one of its biggest contributors.  I think it found
    its identity after a while -- as a repository for discussions of
    the professional racing scene.  It's the equivalent of "Winning"
    magazine, if you consider this conference to be the electronic
    "Bicycling" Magazine.  They represent two different types of 
    journalism -- participant vs. fan.
    
    CYCLE_RACING is located in Europe, where most of the big races are.
    A core group of us (hardy fans) has been following the World Cup
    races, the Vuelta, and others through it for a couple of years.
    
    When a big race comes to the 'States, naturally people want to
    discuss it in the "general purpose" conference.  Personally, I
    wish TdT discussions would continue in CYCLE_RACING.  That goes
    double (triple!) for the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.

     Did I fall into the MOANS file accidently? I see a distinct need
    for both. If you take the time to read the entries you'll see
    s-o-m-e redundancy, but the themes are definitely different. There
    are many more inquiries in the BICYCLE file with a very broad range
    of "expertise". The CYCLE_RACING is more that, racing with a much
    higher level of skill/knowledge as the theme. I thank them for taking
    the time to help me out in the BICYCLE file and participating in
    both.
    
     What about the TRIATHLON file, some redundancy there too. So what.
    There's room for everyone and every topic in both. We're basically
    cut from the same "mold". Some of you just got a little head start
    or were outfitted a little better genetically.

I will take full responsibility for this ridiculous rathole this 
discussion has gone down. For I naively thought that this file would 
tolerate a discussion about probably the only major publicized race in 
the US this year. Silly me. Make a smart*ss remark about reduncancy and 
I get accused of having little wisdom......


LIGHTEN UP! I never intended to suggest that the two files really be 
combined. I was just trying to point out that it is sometimes impossible 
to maintain a purist approach to subject matter in these conferences.

Sorry for all of this stupidness. I will stick to the papers for race 
results in the future.

    Majority rules!  Don't let a few influence your action.  
    
    Acouple replies back I asked why have two notes (And I'm still
    curious!).  The reason being, (in my opinion) combining the two would
    enlighten more cyclist to the world of pro-cycling without having to
    follow 2 notes and, maybe, the input from those from the racing file
    would add to the Bicycling note.  
    
    I'm not "into" racing, but now that I've gotten a little more serious
    about my riding, when I see a cycling event on TV, or wherever, I have
    a better understanding of what's going on and why. 
    
    
    Please, don't restrict your input because of a few.  If it didn't
    belong I sure the Moderators would let you know.
    
    Actually more info would be better.  I had heard the TdT was going to
    take place and that it went from upstate NY to Atlantic City, but that
    all I know about it.

	This is your moderator speaking...

	There is room here for discussion of all forms of bicycling, 
	including racing.

	There are two conferencesbecause someone saw a need for a
	second conference and had the facilities to create one.  If
	there had been no need, the second conference would have 
	eventualy died from lack of participation.  

	When you participate in two conferences with overlaping subject 
	matter you must expect some repetition.  If you watched two
	local news shows every night you would see a lot of stories
	told twice...  but a lot told only once.
